Ignite error on recovery.

Hi,

Ignite-UX B.5.1.61

We are recovering two volume groups vg00 & vg01.
When we start the recovery process Ignite has an error
and says: Error: The volume "/etc/opt/OV/share" is
not a suitable mount volume
(cannot be /sbin, /etc, /dev
or subdirectory of these
directories".

We do have a mount point -
"/etc/opt/OV/share" (OVO).

Can I get around this problem?

10 points to any good answer.
Thank you
Gino

Re: Ignite error on recovery.

What command did you use for making the recovery tape? Did it stop the recovery process? Is the file system mounted on /etc in a seperate VG? Was that VG included in the recovery tape?

Re: Ignite error on recovery.

Hi,

(Ignite-UX B.4.1.61)
The command we used is:

make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -x inc_entire=vg01

The recovery process did stop.
It was running in batch mode and it stopped and said to continue in interactive mode (gui) which I did but it won't
go around the "/etc/opt/OV/share" mount point. It must be some kind of
bug or "feature".

The fs is mount separately,
it's not mounted on "/etc".

Re: Ignite error on recovery.

Gino,

generally Ignite does no allow any mount points under /etc because processes that run in early stages of the boot process, before all filesystems are mounted, may fail. There are some exceptions like /etc/cmcluster.

However, /etc/opt/OV/share is obviously not allowed. Your only solution right now is to mount the volume somewhere else and make /etc/opt/OV/share a symbolic link.

Dietmar.

Re: Ignite error on recovery.

Hi,

Is there a newer version of Ignite-UX available (4.2)?
Does this new version fix this type of problem?

Re: Ignite error on recovery.

Hi,

Could I just rename that
mount point and rename it afterwards to its real name
or will /etc/fstab (or anything else) cause issues?

Re: Ignite error on recovery.

As stated above, when you use cross mount points, especially in /etc, you will have problems. However, you have some options in make_tape_recovery like "-x inc_cross" to use with cross over mount points. I have not tried this, but you may consider doing that. I personally think you should create a symbolic link and seperate the mount point from /etc.

Re: Ignite error on recovery.

As I already said, those mount points are generally not allowed. Sorry to say, this is not a bug. It's feature.

There is a list of possible exeptions... and I just found that /etc/opt/OV is allowed beginning with Ignite 3.5. So you should be able to work around this problem by mounting to /etc/opt/OV instead of /etc/opt/OV/share.

Dietmar.

Re: Ignite error on recovery.

Hi,

According to HP the Ignite on
the March 2003 Application CD
#2) has version B.4.2.110).
Supposely that doesn't have the feature of dis-allowing
mount points under "/etc".

I'm going to download that version (after I put my test server back together again) and I will test using that latest version and will see if that works.
