You might look at Stomp, Inc software for backups including making a bootable recovery CD (tapes on PC's are pretty unusual or pretty darn small). CD-R and CD-RW drives are very common and inexpensive. The software runs about $80 for a single user.

I'll endorse Ghost. The later versions even let you make a bootable restore cd set.
