Ignite image migration from PA RISC servers to Itanium (integrity) servers

Hi,

I need to install integrity servers from PA RISC images taken by HP Ignite UX software. Please let me know whether it is possible, where I can find the documentation.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Ignite image migration from PA RISC servers to Itanium (integrity) servers

Hi

See attached p.241.

Can I run make_net_recovery from a PA-RISC Ignite-UX server to
create an archive for an Itanium-based client or vice versa?
Yes, this is possible, if the client operating system is not running HP-UX
10.20 (see the next question for more information), though additional
steps must be taken. Although the B.4.0 or later versions of Ignite-UX
can be installed on both Itanium-based and PA-based systems. The
make_net_recovery command cannot automatically swpackage the
network recovery tools into /var/opt/ignite/depots/recovery_cmds
depot for a client with mismatched hardware architecture.

Thanks Micheal for the help.

At present I am not able to access the Ignite server, and will check the possibility once I get the access.

Thanks once again.

Re: Ignite image migration from PA RISC servers to Itanium (integrity) servers

I think I'd read that section of the manual slightly different... it all depends on context.

I would read it as saying it is possible from a PA-RISC Ignite Server to create images of Integrity systems. It does not say that you can take PA-RISC images and boot/recover them onto Integrity systems - I cannot see how this would work at all - the install kernel and boot kernel would be for the wrong architecture, and all the system binaries in the archive would be as well. I cannot see this working at all.

Can you step back anbd tell us whta you are trying to acheive here?

Re: Ignite image migration from PA RISC servers to Itanium (integrity) servers

Hi Duncan,

Thanks for the response.

In my current project, I need to set up a DR site where it will be the exact copy of current site. The current environment contains PA RISC servers, but the customer want to set up new site with Itanium servers. So i thought of creating images from existing environment and push those to new servers using Ignite. I need to know the possibility.

Thanks

This isn't going to work.
While Aries can run PA user apps on Integrity, you can't run the kernel.

Hi Bensi,

PA-RISC servers and Integrity servers have different architecture. so, it is not going to work through ignite.

Re: Ignite image migration from PA RISC servers to Itanium (integrity) servers

While you cannot use a PA-RISC image to bring up an Itanium server it is possible to use the manifest of a PA-RISC server to design an image for Itanium.

Most of the software on an 11.23 or 11.31 PA-RISC box will have an equivalent Itanium fileset. There was talk of a tool in this space at one time, but nothing was released. A sed script that adjusted the software spec from "_PA," to "_IA," would be the bulk of it.

My recomendation is to set up pairs of the Itaniums running HP-UX 11iv3/11.31 and move apps to the new environment. Unless you have plans to move the entire data center through the DR mechanism...
