Re: Make boot tape and append a full tar to it
Ignite is the tool designed to do this job. Its not that big.
To fully accomplish the goal is a two step process:
make_tape_recovery
some other kind of backup that can capture the data.
The tool that Ignite uses is make_sys_image
You may be able to use this utility to create a bootable tape. I think its a chicken/egg issue. You may need ignite to get make_sys_image

I assumed you know that. To avoid becoming the first three letters of the word, i try not to assume anything.
Good Luck.

Re: Make boot tape and append a full tar to it
Use inginte and create lif
after that make you archive.
Ignite create lif and save it on FS after that it cp to tape.
but any way, :)) Why you want to do it manualy ?
P.S. Lif must be first file

Re: Make boot tape and append a full tar to it
Second the reason is that i have to run the ingres box down in singeluser mode to have a complete backuptape.
So the ide was to append that tar archive on boottape and do a recovery on a second box
I know that this is done by other people i SIEMENS germany but i donnt know the recipie
thanks again to your replyes

Re: Make boot tape and append a full tar to it
You want ot do cold backup :))
That is your way.
Install ignite. It is free nad small.
make boot tape using command make_tape_recovery. It will store all Vg00.
After that remove tape and when you have time just make cold backup on your system.
when you need recover:
boot from ignite tape and
restore VG00 that will give you tools to restore from from secound tape.
also if you use mt command you can use only 1 tape.
