Makerecovery from a RP4440 to RP8400

Can you do a makerecovery from an RP4440 to a RP8400?

Hi Cary,

I don't know - that's a CPU archtecture jump there that may cause trouble. You'll be going from a PA8800 dual-core system down to a PA8700+ or even a PA8700.
It *may* work, but I wouldn't like to put money on it. Rule of thumb is you stay in the same CPU line & you're OK - you stray to far & you're likely to have trouble.

Hi Cary,

First, if you're using a tape from make_recovery or make_tape_recovery, the source and target system have to be the same type of architecture. This is because there are currently three different Ignite-UX INSTALL kernels that are used. The model of the system does not necessarily have to be the same, but the architecture does or the tape won't boot. The kernels are:

Guess you will have to find out if they have the same architucture.

Hope this helps a bit.

Re: Makerecovery from a RP4440 to RP8400

Robert didn't finish with the three architectures.
The rp4440 and the rp8400 use PA-RISC 2.0 architecture if that is the architecture to which he refers, but there are many uses of the term architecture, so I'm not sure if he means processor architecture or not. Also,
I could name more than three CPU architectures for HP-UX, pa-risc 1.0, pa-risc 1.1, pa-risc 2.0, and Itanium.

This tidbit is in Robert's link. This snip is I think what he meant to add to his post:

This is because there are currently three different Ignite-UX INSTALL kernels that are used. The model of the system does not necessarily have to be the same, but the architecture does or the tape won't boot. The kernels are:

WINSTALL--used for all systems that are 64-bit ONLY (N, L, A,...etc.)

VINSTALL--used for V-class systems

INSTALL--used for systems that can run BOTH 32- and 64-bit (K, D, R,...etc.)

Re: Makerecovery from a RP4440 to RP8400

If you have compatible tape drives it should work. I've recently tested this from rp5450 to rp5470 in an HP performance center.

That might be a good way to go, run a test at your local or nearest HP performance center.

Re: Makerecovery from a RP4440 to RP8400

For the PA-RISC systems in the rp-series, you won't have any difficulties--usually. The disclaimer has to with I/O. Two boxes with similar I/O cards and peripherals should be fine. What will fail will be widely varying disk and tape I/O, specifically fibre versus simple SCSI, DDS versus Ultrium, and similar. The problem is that the necessary drivers must be installed in the source machine before running make_tape_recovery (do not use the obsolete make_recovery program on these new machines).

Re: Makerecovery from a RP4440 to RP8400

I have attempted this before and the restore is successful but the system has had some quirks. Turns out that there are some drivers needed on the newer system that were not included (didn't exist) on our older platform. Took a few separate patch downloads to finally get CDE to work.

Re: Makerecovery from a RP4440 to RP8400

Yes I was able to do a makerecovery from an RP8400 to and RP4440 but there were some SCSI 360 drivers that were missing that caused problems on the new hardware. Once they were resolved the recovery was successful.
