Restore ignite from tape to different server

I was trying to restore ignite of K Class to an N Class through an ignite image in a tape.

I could not find any official document to do this and I am not sure will this work. Can anybody share the experience.

When I boot the system from ignite tape
bo px
it goes it goes to
hpux (0)INSTALL, after waiting a few seconds it returns automatically to >ISL

Thanks

Re: Restore ignite from tape to different server

Practically you could restore the ignite of K class to N class but you would run into lots of problems. Remember Ignite backup is for the same system and not to be used as Image to build other HP servers.

Re: Restore ignite from tape to different server

Shalom,

There are significant hardware differences between these systems.

I don't think the tape will work.

You might have more success with a Golden Software Image. This image is less hardware dependent and includes the equivalent of a Core OS install.

Other chapters in the doc are quite helpful.

Re: Restore ignite from tape to different server

It is not possible to restore the ignite image between two different platforms. Ignite image can be used if h/w platform is identical.

you can take a ignite recovery backup and restore it in the new servers. But Make sure you select the option " restoring on different HW platform" in the advanced options during the ignite backup.

Re: Restore ignite from tape to different server

TYhe way Ignite works is that it copies vg00 and the kernel settings including drivers, etc onto a bootable tape. The K-class has I/O cards that are completely incompatible with the N-class. Similarly, the K-class does not have the drivers needed by the N-class. And of course, if the K-class is running a 32bit kernel, the Ignite image is worthless on 64bit computers. Use this to check your K-class kernel:

getconf KERNEL_BITS

Re: Restore ignite from tape to different server

Hi All,

thanks for the help. I believe its very tough to make the system build from the ignite image of K-Class. Finding the alternate ways..

Once again thank you all
