Steps to restore make_recovery
Currently I am maintaining RP7410, RP5470 and K250 servers. I perfome make_recovery every midth of month.
My question is how to restore the make_recovery on these servers? Can I hv the step by step (including to specify the tape path to boot)?
regards.

Re: Steps to restore make_recovery
First of all your ignite version seems to be quite old and should be upgraded as make_recovery is not supported in new versions and make_tape_recoevry is the replacement.
On to your question you can choose the tape at ISL prompt and then go for loading the OS from the tape.
Also mention the -I button at command line when doing backup so that it goes for restoration in interactive mode.
You can also refer ignite admin guide for more help or FAQs from here.

Re: Steps to restore make_recovery
I would suggest you to upgrade the Ignite version you are using.
For the query you have mention the procedure is as follows.
1.Boot the system
2.When it asks for a key intuption for interupting the boot sequence press any key.
3.This will give you ISL prompt.
4.Do a search for the devices. i.e SEA Command
5.Check which is a tape device ( It will be Mentioned as a Sequencial Device)
6.on the ISL Prompt give Command : BO (Tape device Name i.e. P1 , P2 etc
7. Press N for IPL
8.It will boot from the tape.
9.Here you can select interactive or non-interactive recovey (This depends if you have given options while taking the Backup)

Abhijit

Re: Steps to restore make_recovery
To restore in case of OS failure or reinstallation of OS:
i) Interupt at PDC .
ii) change the boot path to tape.
iii)boot from this tape. It will restore the entire OS.
dont forget to mention points else u may get delayed response in future.
Enjoy..
Cheers,
Yogesh

Re: Steps to restore make_recovery
1) Why there is no man for SEA? Can u pls provide the syntax to search a tape device using SEA command?
2) After I interrupt during isl, the pdc will auto loaded and display all the bootable devices. Am I right? I read thru below statement from man hpux.
Interactive Boot
To use hpux interactively, isl must be brought up in interactive mode
by pressing the Esc key during the interval allowed by pdc. pdc then
searches for and displays all bootable devices and presents a set of
boot options. If the appropriate option is chosen, pdc loads isl and
isl interactively prompts for commands. Information similar to the
following is displayed:
Selection process stopped.
Searching for Potential Boot Devices.
To terminate search, press and hold the ESCAPE key.
Device Selection Device Path Device Type
-------------------------------------------------------------
P0 scsi.6.0 QUANTUM PD210S
P1 scsi.1.0 HP 2213A
p2 lan.ffffff-ffffff.f.f hpfoobar
b) Boot from specified device
s) Search for bootable devices
3) I get the tape hw path by using ioscan. The output is shown as below:
tape 0 10/4/16.3.0 tape2 CLAIMED DEVICE HP C1533A
/dev/diag/rmt/c1t3d0 /dev/rmt/c1t3d0BEST
/dev/rmt/0m /dev/rmt/c1t3d0BESTb
/dev/rmt/0mb /dev/rmt/c1t3d0BESTn
/dev/rmt/0mn /dev/rmt/c1t3d0BESTnb
/dev/rmt/0mnb
So, what command that I need to enter to boot from this tape drive? Is it the command => BO 10/4/16.3.0
4) What is the diff between interative and non-interative mode? As I know, make_recovery doesn't support -l parameter. Pls correct me if I am wrong.
regards.

Re: Steps to restore make_recovery
There will not be any man page for sea at it is not an os command. This message what you are refering to i.e. at PDC prompt you can use this command to see the boot capabale devices attached to the system and will display the output in the same manner as shown above with P0, P1 and P2 etc.
From the description of the device you can understand wheather it is a tape, disk or a lan device.
To boot from that drive followed by sea command at PDC prompt just give
bo p1
or
bo p2
In the output above P0 is your quantum and p1 is HP disk/drive. When you select the tape to boot from with ignite media in it will boot through it.
You can also specify the boot path as option at PDC prompt as mentioned by you.
The difference in Interactive and Non-Interactive is that interactive mode will allow you to change various parameters like disk, file system size, parameters etc. during restore whereas NON-Interactive will wait for some time only to allow you to interrupt the auto-recoevery and if not interrupted then will go fo recovery on the disk at the H/W path of old root disk.

Re: Steps to restore make_recovery
After I press any key for the message"To interrupt, press any key within 10 seconds", is the below sequence correct?
1) isl> prompt will be displayed
2) At isl> prompt, type 'pdc'
3) A menu to show all bootable devices is display on screen.
4) Type 'bo...' to boot from tape or etc.
regards.

Re: Steps to restore make_recovery
Main Menu> sea
This will display all devices attached to the systems.
Main Menu> sea ipl
This will display all potential boot devices that are available. e.g. as P0,P1,P2,..,etc
Main Menu> bo P2
This will boot with your tape drive assuming that P2 was searched as tape device by sea ipl command.
Do you want to interact with IPL> No
This will directly go to booting from tape. If you press "Y" here then it will go to ISL prompt which is not required.
Hope that helps.

Re: Steps to restore make_recovery
After go thru the man page for pdc, isl and hpux, the server bootup sequence after reset that I understand is
pdc -> isl -> hpux
Q1)
The message "To interrupt, press any key within 10 seconds" is occurs at pdc process. Can we press any keys OR need to press & hold the ESC key to see the menu for all the bootable devices? Because according to man pdc as shown below,
If autoboot and autosearch (see isl(1M)) are enabled, pdc waits for
approximately 10 seconds during which time the operator can override
the autoboot sequence pressing and holding the ESC (escape) key on the
console.
The system then begins a search for potentially bootable devices. If
allowed to complete, a list of potentially bootable devices is
displayed, labeled with abbreviated path identifiers (P0, P1, etc). A
simple menu is then displayed where the user can:
+ Boot a specific device, using the abbreviated path identifier,
or the full mnenomic.
+ Start a device search where the contents are searched for IPL
images (note the first search only identified devices and did
not check the contents).
+ Enter the boot administration level.
+ Exit the menu and return to autobooting
+ Get help on choices
Q2) In order to get into ISL prompt, we need to choose Y for interact with IPL. What is IPL?
Q3) What is the command that we can run in multimode to show the bootable devices(scsi hd)?
regards.
