Using HP Ignite

I have a HP-ignite boot tape from a 9000/D370. Is it possible to use this to boot an old G40. The D370 is ruuning HP 11 32-bit which is supported on the G40. The G40 has one unused disk which will contain the new vg00 volume group. Is it possible to add logical volumes that exist on the original vg00 to the new vg00. Both systems contain the same volume groups. Would it be easier just to do a fresh install of the OS on the G40?

Re: Using HP Ignite

I do not believe you will be doing that successfully even you will be able to boot and do a recovery on G40. You will load the contents of tape the kernel which is required to boot for G40 will be certainly different with attached drivers and more things like that. Fresh install will simply give you a better system.

Hope this helps

Re: Using HP Ignite

Its probably not possible to use the D370 tape on the G40.

It might be worth a try, but the hardware is pretty different. Someone might post that they've done it. I've done this within the rp54xx line. I used a rp5450 image to set up a rp5470 server in HP's peformance center.

It probably would be easier to do a fresh installation. It might be fun to try it once if you have time.

Re: Using HP Ignite

Dontknow but worth the try...
I did :
a E55->D210 (HPUX10.01->10.20)
a D230->D280 failed (10.20->11) but
a K360->D280 worked!
a D210->E45 (9.04->10.20) ok

I dont remember which tape I used for the H50
but it worked (maybe K360) It was long ago I remembered not being able to succeed in the reboot because it was missing a specific driver, I found on the CD and all was solved...

Good luck

Re: Using HP Ignite

Hello Doug,

Is your tape made with de -i option? (-I if you used make_tape_recovery). You will need this option to interact with the installer so you can change some parameters at the installation time in your old G40.

Regards.

Re: Using HP Ignite

Hi Doug,
Suggest you to do fresh install rather than wasting time on troubleshooting later.
It's not a question of OS version supported but then the Hardware Platform and it's associated drivers does matter.

Re: Using HP Ignite

Hi

I don't think you can use it on G40.
you can't use the ignite copy of S800 series machines on s700 series
never give up

Re: Using HP Ignite

I was able to boot the system and install the OS on the unused drive.
