Using older golden image with an rp4400

Hello everyone,

I'm installing 11i on an rp4400 using an older golden image that was originally generated on an rp5400.

Everything seems to be going ok until I do the final boot and then I get:

System Panic:

linkstamp: Tue Nov 30 15:01:34 MET 2004
_release_version: @(#) $Revision vmunix: vw: -proj selectors: CUPI80_BL2000_1108 -c 'Vw for CUPI80_BL2000_1108 build' -- cupi80_bl2000_1108 'CUPI80_BL2000_1108' Wed Nov 8 19:24:56 PST 2000 $
panic: all VFS_MOUNTROOTs failed: NEED DRIVERS ?????

PC-Offset Stack Trace (read across, top of stack is 1st):
0x002128d8 0x0030a2b8 0x0035c6b4
0x00467724 0x0035c990 0x001792f4
0x00200764
End of Stack

The "NEED_DRIVERS ?????" gives me the idea that if I add the latest HW Enable patches into the installation sequence that I might be able to use this image.

Has anyone tried this sort of thing before ?

Does anyone know if it's a hopeless exercise ?? :-)

Cheers,
Norman

by the time you got done screwing around with trying to fix your previous Golden Image you could have built the machine from scratch. it's your time :-)

Heh. Too easy.

This will be the eventual solution. But I'm trying to fit the proverbial square peg in the round hole here...

Re: Using older golden image with an rp4400

Are you using vPars on your 7400? Did the ignite image from your 5400 include the vPars software? I seem to recall we had this exact same problem when we tried to ignite a vPar with an image that did NOT have the vPars software loaded on it.
I think, therefore I am... I think!

Hi,

Norman is restoring on a rp4440 not on a rp7400.

Re: Using older golden image with an rp4400

Norman,

on the rp54xx you should add the latest HW Enablement Bundle and a current Ignite version, then there is no reason why it should not work on an rp4440.

Re: Using older golden image with an rp4400

rp5400's CPU type is PA8600 or PA8700.
rp4440's CPU type is PA8800.
System board and interface cards are newer in
your rp4400.

The old kernel and drivers do not know about the new hardware and CPU.
There is no way to fix this except building a new golden image.

The reason why you were able to install the golden
image is, that you probably installed with a new Ignite version.
The Ignite kernel is able to handle the new hardware but the old kernel from your image is not.

Hope this help,
Armin
And now for something completely different...

Re: Using older golden image with an rp4400

Yeah,

this is basically what we thought could be achieved by adding HWE 2004/12 installation at the very end of our ignite restore, but it failed...

Our guess is that even HWE was installed, it somehow didn't get into the kernel, so that at last reboot, we still had the failure.

Re: Using older golden image with an rp4400

Norman / Cyrille,

Armin has the right idea - *but* you need to force ignite to build a new kernel rather than use the one on the image...

Boot from tape
-> Install HP-UX
-> Advanced Installation
-> Basic tab
-> Additional ...
-> Change "Cloning to different HW?" from FALSE to TRUE
