booting itanium from ignite tape not working, getting a shell

HP-UX 11iv2
rx4640 is the target server
bl860 is the original server
ignite version 7.4.157

I have backed up the bl860c IA-64 11iv2 server using make_tape_recovery -A

When I boot from this tape (LTO 2) on the rx4640 server at our DR site it loads up from tape but enters a shell

I expected it to load up the ignite menu, but it doesnt seem to get this far.

how can I get to recover the system with ignite?

Re: booting itanium from ignite tape not working, getting a shell

What firmware version is on your rx4640?

Version System FW 04.10 added the tape support.

PF_CDIABSYS0410AEFI (20 Nov 2006)
=========================================
MP FW : E.03.30
BMC FW : 04.03
EFI FW : 05.46
System FW : 04.10

current version:

PF_CDIABSYS0429.zip (19 Mar 2008)
=========================================
MP FW : E.03.32
BMC FW : 04.06
EFI FW : 05.48
System FW : 04.29

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Can you post the error during the boot ?

First guess is attempting to recovery from bl860cc to an rx4640..(questionable disparaging platforms).

Has this recovery ever worked before ?

Re: booting itanium from ignite tape not working, getting a shell

From the known issues section of the current firmware release notes:

"- Tape drive product LTO448 takes longer to rewind a tape than the allotted
60 second timeout. Therefore, if the tape boot fails with a timeout while
rewinding, the tape boot should be re-attempted after a few seconds. "

Do you get any related messages?

Hope this helps!

Re: booting itanium from ignite tape not working, getting a shell

unfortunitely there are no error messages
the system boots from tape and enters a shell instead of loading the ignite recovery

This is a new rx server and this is the first time we have tried this, its more of a proof of concept at the moment.

Re: booting itanium from ignite tape not working, getting a shell

I remember if you are using hyperterminal with ansi emulation, the system sometimes gets a "double" return key event - so you run the recovery shell automagically.

;-))

try putty!

Hope this helps!

Re: booting itanium from ignite tape not working, getting a shell

Shalom,

There are some setup steps needed on the system to create tape boot infrastructure.

There may be some problems using a make_tape_recovery image made on an bl860c on an rx4640.

The hardware is pretty different.
