Solution
You should have asked this on Sun forums. ;-)
About JumpStart. Hummm, almost.
JumpStart will not let you generate an image of a running server. That is, no "make_net_recovery" or "make_tape_recovery" facilities.
JumpStart is great for cloning a bunch of servers full of packages following Solaris package format, but it won't generate a "Golden Image" - packages will be ever installed individually, one by one. There's not the concept of one large tar file with /, /usr, /var, /opt and so on.
The solution? Well, just mount your old filesystems in /a/ and bring the restore back, AS LONG THE NEW HARDWARE IS IDENTICAL. Otherwise you'll have all sorts of trouble with /etc/path_to_inst, /devices and /dev.
A dd of /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s2 will also work well, provided that these conditions are met.
Just my 0.02,
Paulo Fessel
