You should be able to read or list files or directories from a make_recovery tape as a test to see if it is good.

mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1
tar -xvf /dev/rmt/0m directory_path
or
tar -tvf /dev/rmt/0m to list contents of the tape
