Trying to make an ignite tape and recover with it. I'll not be confortable with it if I can't quickly recover
I created a tape Ignite C.6.2.241
/opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I
It reports sucessfull.
I am unable to read the tape.
mt -f /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1
pax -vf /dev/rmt/0mn
This works on my PA systems Ignite C.6.1.44
RECOVERY LOG PART
* /opt/ignite/data/scripts/make_sys_image -c n -d /dev/rmt/0mn -t n -s
local -n 2005-10-10,15:41 -m t -w
/var/opt/ignite/recovery/2005-10-10,15:41/recovery.log -u -R -g
/var/opt/ignite/recovery/2005-10-10,15:41/flist -a 8167990
* Preparing to create a system archive.
* Archiving contents of oradevt via tar image to local device/dev/rmt/0mn.
* Creation of system archive complete.

Re: make_tape_recovery verify on itanium HPUX 11.23
Rather than pax, can you try using tar?
mt -f /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1
tar -tvg /dev/rmt/omn

Re: make_tape_recovery verify on itanium HPUX 11.23
According to the C.6.2 release notes, the tape format used for Itanium systems
has changed in order to provide future support for direct boot capability. For
more details, see the Ignite-UX release notes:
/opt/ignite/share/doc/release_note
In order to access the tar archive, do the following, assuming /dev/rmt/0mn is
the device in question:
# mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn rew
# mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 22
# pax -vt /dev/rmt/0m
I tried this and It does work.

SolutionI am also facing the same problem. The only difference is, i am using "rx2620" h/w (HPUX 11.23).
In my case also, the archiving went on smoothly. But, when i attached the tape drive onto the m/c & try to boot through it, it fails !!
I am interested to know, how did you succeed in doing this ??
Also, where did you run these commands:
# mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn rew
# mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 22
# pax -vt /dev/rmt/0m
Waiting eagerly for your answer.
Regards,
Ramesh.K.R.

Re: make_tape_recovery verify on itanium HPUX 11.23
Those lines were run from the command line when the system was up only to verify that the tape was good without actually igniting the system.
Also be avare of the fact that the boot media and the tape media must match.

Re: make_tape_recovery verify on itanium HPUX 11.23
The only way to be sure the image will work is to use the image. That requires you to either recover it to a scratch system or to arrange time in a local HP performane center to test it.
There are things that can go wrong that happen after recovery or that do not have anything to do with reading the tape, which is what the work on this issue have shown thus far.
