moving a server from rp8420 to rx8640

I want to take a hp-ux 11.23 server running
on a rp8420(pa-risc) and move it to a
rx8640(itanium). So far I used ignite to
create a network recovery archive of the
pa-risc server and copied over it's CINDEX
file to the itanium server's
/var/opt/ignite/clients/rp8640 directory.
However, when I use ignite to install the the
pa-risc image on the itanium server I get
an no software available error. Is the procedure I'm attempting even possible?
Can I recover a pa-risc recovery image
to an itanium server?

Re: moving a server from rp8420 to rx8640

Can't do this sorry.

The RP is PA-RISC the RX is Itanium, completely different platform/chipset.

This will require a cold install to the Itanium.

Hi

Different CPU, different arch, different chipset so you can't migrate or move PA-RISC -> Itanium

Hi Royal,

It will never be possible to use ignite of OS running on PA-RISC on a Itanium server, as mentioned above there are several factors which will not allow you to do so.

So best method is to do a fresh installation through OS CD.

Re: moving a server from rp8420 to rx8640

Thanks everyone for the response.
What is a good procedure to recover the
logical volumes and file systems on the
rp8420 server that are attached to the
san? Basically, I want to port the old
extra volumes on the rp8420 to the new
server I'm going to build on the rx8640.
Thanks again for the reponses.

Re: moving a server from rp8420 to rx8640

Basically, just build the new server, then allocate the same LUNs to it as the rp8420, create a map file on the rp8420 for all the vg's you want to move (vgexport -p -v -s -m /tmp/vgXX.map /dev/vgXX ), umount the file systems on th rp8420, vgimport the LUNs on the rx8640, then mount them.

I'm going to be doing the same shortly - from rp7410's to rx8640's myself.

Re: moving a server from rp8420 to rx8640

do a vgexport -p -v -m -s to create a map file for each volume group and move it to the itanium server, attach all of your disk from the old server and do a vgimport.

So, do I move the map files created on the
rp8420 to the rx8640 and then do the
vgimport?

Re: moving a server from rp8420 to rx8640

Yes. You need the map files created from the old server to use for the import on the new server. You can choose not to use the map files but then all lvols will have generic names ( lvol1, lvol2, ... ).

FYI, You must at least deactivate the VGs on the old system before you import and activate on the new system. ( i.e. both servers cannot have the disk active at the same time ).
