trouble adding external tape drive to L2000 server

I am having a little difficulty in getting a new external tape drive (HP C7438A тАУ DAT72) to be recognized by my L2000 server. I had no problems on the RP3410 or J6000 with this and wonder if any of you can see where I might be going wrong with this one. The following in my procedure:

1)add stape driver to the kernel.
2)Run lsdev тАУC tape to verify the presence of the driver in the system
3)Run hook up the tape drive to the external scsi port and turn it on
4)Run insf тАУe to install the device files
5)Run ioscan тАУfn to get the system to pick up the tape drive

This procedure worked perfectly on two systems, but on the L2000 system the insf тАУe does not list out that it installed files for stape like it did on the other systems. I believe this is why in turn the ioscan for the tape drive fails. I cannot figure out why insf тАУe is failing when I can verify the presence of the stape driver in the kernel through SAM and also with lsdev тАУC tape. The scsi controller that I am attaching to is at 0/5/0/0.7.0 and is claimed by the system and presumably working. The termination of the tape drive would put it at 0.3.0, so there should not be any conflict and nothing else is on that scsi controller according to ioscan.

Anyway, I am a little bit mystified by this one. Everything worked so well with the other two HP-UX systems and making the ignite images was a piece of cake. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: trouble adding external tape drive to L2000 server

There could be a scsi conflict, maybe scsi id 7 is being used by another device. Can you change the scsi id to something else for the tape device ? Or, search or find all scsi ids allocated on the server, by reboot and take a look at the scsi addresses that are claimed by the server? There is a low-level PDC to dump or print the scsi ids while the server is in IPL or command mode prior to a hpux load.

Another plan:

also, you can remove the Hardware path of the tape device. rmsf I believe and give the h/w path. reboot the server with the tape device power'ed off. once up, re-run the ioscan -kfnC tape. You should not see this device. Any claimed scsi id using 7 ?? Okay, nothing is using scsi id 7 ? So, turn the power on the tape device and run: IOSCAN -FN
do you see the tape device h/w path ? Now try that insf -ev followed by a IOSCAN -kfnC tape

Re: trouble adding external tape drive to L2000 server

Your commands are out of sequence. You need to do an ioscan -fn before you do an insf.

Post the output of ioscan -fn with that tape drive connected are powered on. ... and yes, the entire output should be posted.

The standard things to examine are 1) is this SCSI bus properly terminated? In exactly two places and at the physical ends of the bus? Is at least one device supplying termination power? ... and "termination" has absolutely nothing to do with the SCSI ID.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: trouble adding external tape drive to L2000 server

That's right, I do have the insf and ioscan reversed in what I wrote. I also meant scsi id, not termination. Not good for me to be writing when distracted. Anyway, I did actually do the ioscan first before the insf while trying to get this to work. I do appreciate the help and I will post the ioscan output asap.

Thanks! :-)

Re: trouble adding external tape drive to L2000 server

Here is the ioscan -fn for my system. The scsi card that I am connected to is a lone card giving me an external connector with nothing else attached as far as I can tell. The card is at 0/5/0/0. The tape drive is set on scsi id 3 and has the terminator attached to it. The tape drive works configured like this just fine on two other systems. However, ioscan is not picking it up. Also, I did not mention that this system is running HP-UX 11.00.

Re: trouble adding external tape drive to L2000 server

OK, now I understand your problem. Your controller at 0/5/0 is a Fast Wide Differential (Hi Voltage Differential) SCSI devicer and your tape drive is not. You absolutely cannot mix HVD anything (even terminators) with anything not HVD. You need to use a compatible HBA (LVD or SE SCSI).

Moreover, no HVD devices are supported at 11.23 and up.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: trouble adding external tape drive to L2000 server

It looks like the built-in SCSI connector is still free - connect the drive there. This bus is LVD. Your tape drive should work there.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: trouble adding external tape drive to L2000 server

Bingo! I learn something new everyday. I did not realize the difference between HVD scsi and LVD scsi. I hooked up on the LVD connector (which was a bit hidden away at the bottom of the chasis and beneath the octopus cable for the UPS and the terminal) and life is good again. The help has been much appreciated. Now I have issues with the Ignite-UX installed on the system, but I'll start a separate thread for that if need be.

Re: trouble adding external tape drive to L2000 server

With ignite issues, do you mean the ignite process crashes/hangs while writing to the tape connected to the lowest scsi bus ?
If so, in the past we've experienced problems on RP54xx/L-Class systems with tape units connected to that particular bus.
The problem appeared on some of those systems but not on all of them.
Unfortunately we never really put alot of time and effort in it to see if it was related to firmware or something.
Instead we just ordered a lvd interface for all systems just to be sure.
