Capturing and deploying BL465c image with LVM?

Hi,

I am evaluating ICLE 1.60 and playing with setting up kickstart installations of RHEL4U5 for my company's product range - it all works very well.

Our products use LVM2 to partition the OS for the flexibility it gives when resizing / adding space etc.

It would be ideal to be able to use the save image / deploy image facility but have read in the User guide that LVM deployment is not supported. In actual fact I cannot save an image of a server using LVM either. (I get this error :

-------------== Capture Linux ==-------------
[2008-03-28 13:29:22] Starting Imaging Task ..
[2008-03-28 13:29:23] Estimated capture size: 0 kilobytes (uncompressed)
[2008-03-28 13:29:23] No data to capture ! Check for mount failure!
[2008-03-28 13:29:23] Failed
)

Typically my filesystem is carved up as follows:

My question is : is there a plan to enable ICLE to deploy LVM images in the future?

Cheers, Matt

Have you tried mondo rescue? It supports LVM.
Por que hacerlo dificil si es posible hacerlo facil? - Why do it the hard way, when you can do it the easy way?

Re: Capturing and deploying BL465c image with LVM?

Hi Matt!

The ability to deploy LVM images is supported in the HP ICE-Linux v2.0 product that was released on 31-March-2008. We call the new product HP ICE-Linux v2.0 (short for Insight Control Environment for Linux v2.0), and it can be accessed at URL http://www.hp.com/go/ice-linux . You can download an evaluation copy or purchase from this URL also. ICE-Linux will replace the current ICLE product. (The current ICLE product will continue to be supported by HP for quite a while.)

ICE-Linux uses the discovery-deployment-imaging engine acquired from RLX Technologies (found in the HP CT and ICLE products), and combines this with robust monitoring and management capabilities which are based on Nagios and other open source software. These capabilities are integrated in HP SIM running on Linux, and include Insight Power Manager and iLO Select Pack. The HP SIM platform is significant because it allows us to deliver new technology and management innovations in a consistent fashion over time.

The monitoring capabilities are significantly improved in ICE-Linux over CT or ICLE products -- and allow either browser or command line access. ICE-Linux auto-configures Nagios on the fly for the user to be quickly productive, while maintaining the flexibility and extensibility of the underlying open source software (i.e. access to scripts, use of plug-ins, etc.). Nagios is the most visible open source software that is integrated into the SIM environment, but there are actually several different sets of open source code that have been integrated to allow users to enjoy very robust monitoring & management control.

The intent with the ICE-Linux product is to deliver the best of HP and Open source technologies for management of industry-standard servers to our Linux users. This is a foundational release that allows us to deliver new innovations and better technologies in a consistent fashion moving forward.

Go to URL http://www.hp.com/go/ice-linux for more info.

Hope this helps!

Re: Capturing and deploying BL465c image with LVM?

Hi Bob, yes this does help a lot. Hot off the press I see and very timely! I will check it out. Is ICLEv2.0 licensed the same way as ICLE v1.60 ? ie; free to download software but then license on use with a flexible ICLElicense per blade (p/n 452157-B21)?

Thanks Ivan for you response also it helps to have a number of options.

Hi Matt!

The licensing on ICE-Linux is handled differently than ICLE, but a free evaluation copy is still available.. Go to http://www.hp.com/go/ice-linux. You'll see the link.
