A6869A VGA card question

We plan to implement 2 partitions on a RX8640. Do we need a VGA card for each partition if we want VGA console access?

Re: A6869A VGA card question

Hi,

the A6869A is not supported for this box, but A6869B is, see

http://docs.hp.com/en/SFWM1/ch02.html

Hope this helps!

Re: A6869A VGA card question

Tortsen,

Thanks for the reply. I probably got the part number wrong, but the main question is if i need a VGA/USB card for each partition i create, I think i do, just want to make sure.

Thanks again

Re: A6869A VGA card question

It may depend on the OS, but for sure you don't need a graphics card for HP-UX.

Even for other operating systems are "headless" configurations (without graphics) available.

Hope this helps!

Re: A6869A VGA card question

Each hard partition requires a core I/O board, and each core I/O board provides a console, and each console has MP and (AFAIK) VGA. (Most folks I've dealt with tend to use the network connection into the MP far more regularly than the VGA. Myself included.) For the creation of three or four partitions, add another Server Expansion Unit (SEU) onto the order, in addition to a core I/O board for each partition.

On various of the Integrity servers, the management processor (MP) itself has an embedded Radeon 7000 graphics controller, and OpenVMS supports graphics on the MP on various of the Integrity servers.

You do not need graphics at all for OpenVMS I64, because, well, OpenVMS I64 doesn't yet have VGA console support. (It's apparently planned.)

Regardless, I'd confirm your requirements and the requisite Integrity rx8640 series configuration with your HP rep or reseller; with whomever you are purchasing the system from.

Re: A6869A VGA card question

On the RX8640 the core I/O card is combined with the MP (it isn't a PCI card) and provides 1 SCSI, 1serial, 1 ethernet for the host and 1 ethernet for the MP - that's it.
There is no VGA.
If you really need a graphics card, you need to buy and install one.

But again, most operation systems running on this server don't need a graphics card.

Hope this helps!
