Easiest way to clone from Itanium to I2 hardware?

I was hoping an ignite with 'clone to new hardware' set should work? One caveat being we are on Ignite C.7.11.439 (which we know is out of date but at least supports agile devices).

Specifically the hardware is an rx3600 being replaced with a bl860  i2.

Any experiences and input welcomed as I don't have any kit to test on yet.

Cheers

Chris

Re: Easiest way to clone from Itanium to I2 hardware?

No experience, but there is a minimum release requirement for the "i2" servers, newest probably the best (currently march 2012 release) and a couple of hardware dependent patches and drivers. So consider to "update-ux" your source system to the latest and use a "golden image" for cloning - try and you will know. Don't forget to check the new system for missing patches.

And btw, when installing a bl860ci2 - set the disk drives to hardware raid (smartarray to RAID mode)!

Hope this helps!

Re: Easiest way to clone from Itanium to I2 hardware?

The source system is was update-ux'd with Sep 11 with ignite excluded.

Will give it a go when I get some i2 and update this post.

Again, if anyone has done this,  I'd love to hear your experiences.

Re: Easiest way to clone from Itanium to I2 hardware?

And a different idea, if you have a P400 installed in your rx3600.

Create a pair of disks as a RAID1 and use drd-clone to clone the OS to them.

Move the disks to the "i2" and try to boot from.

This is called "drive roaming" and could work - I cloned this way several pairs of boot disks in a bl890ci2 for other similar servers in a couple of minutes.

The smartarray p410i MUST be set to RAID mode!!!

Hope this helps!

Re: Easiest way to clone from Itanium to I2 hardware?

Its boot from san and we can switch boot disks between the rx3600 and a bl860 without issues.

I2 is an unknown to us.

This would be the prefered option obviously.

Re: Easiest way to clone from Itanium to I2 hardware?

So an easy test would be to clone the LUN on SAN and boot the new server from this clone, right?

Hope this helps!

That's the plan. Just need to get my paws on the hardware.

Re: Easiest way to clone from Itanium to I2 hardware?

It is not so different from the old bl860c you already know in this relation.

You have different hardware (LOM, disk controller, cpu, of course), but it works more or less the same way.

You go into the FC hba BIOS and set the efiscanlevel to detect the lun on san once presented and boot from ...you will see if this works. Maybe you don't have network connectivity then because of missing drivers, but you will see this soon. Try to install all needed drivers on your source system.

Hope this helps!
