Fc card compatibility with pci-e slots

Hi,

We have a new SD32 that brings pci-e slots:

I wan't to use some pci/pci-x FC cards I have from another SD, the model is:
HP AB378-60001 4Gb Single Port PCI/PCI-X

do you know if this tipe of Fc cards are compatible with these new pci-e slots ? , can I use them ?
Windows?, no thanks

Re: Fc card compatibility with pci-e slots

Hello Daniel,

no, the PCI/PCI-X cards are not compatible with PCI Express. The slots are physically different. For lower end servers there is an option to order a combined PCI/PCIe backplane, but I am not sure whether a combo cage exists for the Superdome I/O bay. Check documentation or contact a HP Sales Rep.

Re: Fc card compatibility with pci-e slots

I did a little research myself and found the following information:

For Superdomes, it is possible to have either a full PCI-X I/O chassis (12 PCI-X slots) or a mixed PCIe/PCI-X I/O chassis (6 slots each). So your options are to order one of the following:

PCI EXPRESS and PCI-X mixed I/O chassis (6 slots each)
AB405A

PCI-X only I/O chassis
A9836A

Hope this helps,
Jozef

Thnx!, I have a mixed IO chassis, the problems is if they are not compatible I need 7 pci-x slots :***

Well, yes, in that case you either need to give up one of your PCI-X cards or go for another chassis ;-) Don't know which one is a lesser evil :-)

Re: Fc card compatibility with pci-e slots

Hi Daniel,

according to your olrad output you have at least 2 I/O chassis, both mixed.

So you have
2x 6 PCI-X
and
2x 6 PCIe slots.

Check with olrad -q!

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Fc card compatibility with pci-e slots

Why not replacing an old PCI-X card by a brand new and very fast PCIe card, e.g. the fibre channel?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Fc card compatibility with pci-e slots

Yep, that's how it should be, to buy new pci-e FC cards, but at the moment it's a money issue we have to try and survive with what we have.

In a near future(I hope), we will be purchasing some new FC pci-e cards.

Thnx for your help
