Icap question after adding cpu to rx7640

Hi,

We are going to add a cpu to our rx7640 server, next weak, the cpu we are going to add comes from another rx7640 we have. my question is, Will I have a problem with ICAP using this cpu ?, is it going to deactivate it and wont let me use it until I get a license from HP ?. The servers don't have support contract anymore.

Re: Icap question after adding cpu to rx7640

Do you already have icap cpus in your system?
"icapstatus" should show you.

Hope this helps!

Re: Icap question after adding cpu to rx7640

They where never activated via license with Icap the came with the server, but they are under icap control:

Local nPartition Status
-----------------------
Total number of configured cores: 2
Number of Intended Active cores: 0
Number of active cores: 2
Number of inactive cores: 0
Additional cores that can be activated with current usage rights: 0
Number of cores that could be activated with additional usage rights: 0
Number of cores that can be activated with temporary capacity: 0
Number of cores that are deconfigured or attached to inactive cells: 0

Re: Icap question after adding cpu to rx7640

Although I have to add, that this server has problems with cimserver eating 100% cpu, so I have it disabled most of the time( I have to fix it updating sfm that is the root of the cause ).

and also...
ERROR: The Instant Capacity daemon (icapd(1M)) is not running on this
partition. The functions this daemon performs are vital to keeping
the complex-wide view of the Instant Capacity state current.

Re: Icap question after adding cpu to rx7640

You can check the present hardware patches installed in your system for high cpu utilization for cim process.

Also, I think, with icap, you can enable already installed inactive cpus after you are buying the icap license.
For new cpu installation, no icap activation will be needed.

Thanks,

Re: Icap question after adding cpu to rx7640

Ok, so then I should be ok, installing the new cpus.

and out of curiosity, where is the icap information saved ?, only at OS in the /etc/.iCOD_data or also at server firmware level?.

Because I understand if you remove a cpu from the server, it has no knowledge of it's previous icap state?

Re: Icap question after adding cpu to rx7640

Hi,

Yes you should be ok, I have done that kind of operation once, on a cell that didn't have previous icaped cores, and it worked fine.Because as it has been said, you are not activating a cpu, you are adding new cpus.
Windows?, no thanks

Also this Wihite Paper might help you monitor iCap:
