Re: Install SUSE Linux Enterprise server (SLES) 10 on rx2600

Are you using the "serial" port on the MP? My DIMM memory has a few errors in it, but IIRC for "Linux" you want to boot to EFI and go into bootconfig, then configure just the console device of your choice for output (in the case of the MP serial, the one with the longer PCI path - sorry for the vagueness it has been a little while since I need to deal with that) then do the usual reset thing.

(I generally set error and input as well but have been told, but not verified myself that setting just output is sufficient).

Then in theory, the bits should be able to "find" the console after the initrd bit. Likely as not things aren't really hung, it is just tyring to use the "wrong console."

I may have forgotten something, but that should be a start. Might also be worth rummaging around SuSE and docs.hp.com for readme's and such.

Re: Install SUSE Linux Enterprise server (SLES) 10 on rx2600

Hi Rick,
Thanks for your suggestion..
I was trying to install using a console connecting to it.. then i changed the i/p, o/p & error devices through EFI boot menu option...(now i am able to see the display on my monitor...)

I would like to add few more points...
(*) I Made all settings in the boot option for i/p,o/p & error devices
(*) Added a boot option to boot from CD (as a first boot option)
(*) When it start booting from CD, I am getting a "text" based GUI
showing the options:
Installation
Installation - Safe settings
Manual Installation
Rescue system

When i select any of these options (i tried selecting all..!!one by one...), it starts
uncompressing Linux & den Loading file initrd... till this time it reads
from CD, After that it just stops reading it..

Is it a problem with Monitor/VGA am using...??? or the problem with
CD/DVD ROM...???

And one more thing is... that server is having RedHat Linux previously installed...

Thanks,
Praveen

Re: Install SUSE Linux Enterprise server (SLES) 10 on rx2600

I thought the post 2.6.10 kernels (and SLES 10's kernel is post 2.6.10) "knew" how to find the console. Perhaps there is a console=mumble in the elilo.conf file on the CD that needs to be overridden.

In the olden days, one would say something like linux console=ttyS0

but with the 2.6.10 and later, what used to be ttyS0 is actually ttySN where N can be anywhere between 0 and 4 depending on the system. So, I suspect you could try "install console=ttySN" and iterate thought a couple of values of N.

Re: Install SUSE Linux Enterprise server (SLES) 10 on rx2600

For example, an HP rx1600 with a single built-in serial port
(described in the ACPI namespace) plus an MP (a PCI device) has
these ports:

pre-2.6.10 pre-2.6.10
MMIO (EFI console (EFI console
address on builtin) on MP port) 2.6.10
========== ========== ========== ======
builtin 0xff5e0000 ttyS0 ttyS1 ttyS0
MP UPS 0xf8031000 ttyS1 ttyS2 ttyS1
MP Console 0xf8030000 ttyS2 ttyS0 ttyS2
MP 2 0xf8030010 ttyS3 ttyS3 ttyS3
MP 3 0xf8030038 ttyS4 ttyS4 ttyS4
