Problem attaching IBM 3590 tape drive to a rx7620 server running 11i v2

I am trying to attach a IBM 3590 tape drive to a Itegrity rx7620 server via fibre. In the HP-UX server we are using the A6795A adapter. I have already installed the IBM drivers that are needed, I have rebooted and they show up in the kernal. When I run ioscan I do not see the drive, also when I look at the two green lights on the HBA card only one is one, the activity light is always off. On the operator panel of the tape drive there there are ways to set the fibre addresses, choice of two numbers. How do I know what to set these at on the tape drive? Is there anything I have to do to configure the HBA on the server end?

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi,

The activity/power LED should lit up either steady or blinking depending on if the connection is done and any FC communication.
Check if the card is seated correctly in the PCI-X slot and should lit the power LED.

Assuming you have installed latest FCMS patch, td driver, EFI firmware for A6795A, you should see this card in
# ioscan -fn
Check specifically the "ioscan" entries from the HBA card downwards like
fc 0 1/1/0/0 td CLAIMED HP Tachyon XL2 Fibre Channel Mass Storage Adapter

Note HBA device file from ioscan and run
# fcmsutil e.g. /dev/td0

Refer the A6795A installation guide at
http://docs.hp.com/en/A6795-90006/index.html

Check the FC I/O addressing scheme used by the tape drive in its manual.

By the way, which "IBM Drivers" you have installed? How you are connecting the drive to the server ( direct or through switch )?

Re: Problem attaching IBM 3590 tape drive to a rx7620 server running 11i v2

Sameer,

There are two LEDS on the HBA, the power LED is always on, even if there is no fibre plugged in. The other LED is for activity and it has never turned green even when I plug in the fibre.

When I do a ioscan -fn it returns the following..
fc 0 0/0/6/1/0 td CLAIMED INTERFACE HP Tachyon XL2 Fibre Channel Mass Storage Adapter
So it appears that the card is installed and working.

I am using the drivers from this IBM ftp site..
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr/HPUX/11i_PCI/
Specifically the atdd.5.5.0.29.bin one, I have also installed tapeutil, IBM's tape utility application.

Thanks for your help,

Sameer,

One more thing, I am attaching the tape drive directly to the HBA, No Switch...

If it is a direct connect, you need to set the HBA to reverse HL-PA...

Alan,

Thanks for the response, can you please give me an idea how to set this?

I believe you'll find the solution here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManualтМй=en&cc=us&docIndexId=179111&taskId=135&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=311420.

Otherwise, you could try flipping the fiber connectors around...
