Problems installing anything on 2600

I initially had a lot of fun updateing theFW on this puppy.

Now when trying to install HPUX 11.23 or 11.3 on the the box I get through a successfull POST and start the DVD boot process only to stop after a bit and never continue.

See attachment below for example;

Re: Problems installing anything on 2600

Was the console selection done correctly as mentioned in the document at http://www.docs.hp.com/en/5187-2725/ch04s03.html

Re: Problems installing anything on 2600

Would that make a difference? I am installing using a serial terminal basically.

I didn't have this issues with the 2620, 3440, or anything else I tried to install on. (Several other BCS boxes)

Re: Problems installing anything on 2600

Well it does makes a difference.
If you read the link given you would see thse statements.

"If you are cold-installing HP-UX, or change your system configuration, you may need to select the correct console. Skipping this step can result in HP-UX using an unexpected device as a console, and can therefore appear as a system hang."

"HP-UX makes decisions based upon the EFI Boot Maintenance Manager menu's Select Active Console sections to determine where to send its output. If the incorrect console devices are chosen, HP-UX may either fail to boot, or will boot with output directed to the wrong location. Therefore, any time new potential console devices are added to a system, or anytime NVRAM on a system is cleared, console selections should be reviewed to ensure that they are correct."

Re: Problems installing anything on 2600

Which one of these is the MP Serial or network port? Which is what I am trying to use to install the OS from at this point. If this works I will give you all the marble!! 8-)

Select the Console Output Device(s)
Acpi(PNP0501,0)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(PcAnsi)
Acpi(PNP0501,0)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(Vt100)
Acpi(PNP0501,0)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(Vt100+)
Acpi(PNP0501,0)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(VtUtf8)
Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(1|1)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(PcAnsi)
Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(1|1)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(Vt100)
Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(1|1)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(Vt100+)
Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(1|1)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(VtUtf8)*
Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(2|0)
Acpi(HWP0003,400)/Pci(0|0)
Save Settings to NVRAM Exit

Re: Problems installing anything on 2600

The MP serial port entry is

Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(1|1)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(Vt100)

Ensure that the entry is the only one selected. Similarly ensure that you set Input and Error devices as well as per the document.

Re: Problems installing anything on 2600

Last question(s), is there a list that explains what each line in the "console" configuration is?

Or can you tell me what the VGA option would be so that I can use a KVM post installation to log into the 2600 graphically?

Thanks very much for your support. I just started working with HP-UX in July due to a positional change. So I am really new to HP-UX for the most part. BCS hardware has been a "FUN" learning experience!

Re: Problems installing anything on 2600

It could be that one or more of the system manuals for the rx2600 will describe the various entries. Start at http://docs.hp.com/

Re: Problems installing anything on 2600

The console devices list is described in the rx2600 Operations and Maintenance guide available at (page 35)
http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-5988/5991-5988.pdf

As per the documentation , in brief
1. Entry with just "Uart" is an on-board serial port with an entry for each supported terminal emulation.
2. Entry with "Pci" and "Uart" is an add-on PCI board serial port entry ( MP in this case) with an entry for each supported terminal emulation.
3. Entry with just "Pci" would be an add-on PCI based port without any serial port ( MP VGA or AGP graphics port etc.)

In this case, MP VGA port entry is
Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(2|0)

Keep in mind that even if the MP VGA port can be defined and act as "Console",, it can't display POST, early bootup messages.
