Last night I tried to upgrade an rx7620 from a firmware level back in 2005 to the latest and greatest. It failed.
I upgraded the MP. I upgraded the PDHC and SFW. And the dict and then the PDHC fpga code. All without problems in the upgrade, except sysrev still showed the old version for the PDHC fpga code
I then recycled the server power wise after having tried to update the PDHC fpga code twice.
The MP came up just fine, but the cells are unusable. Listing version 0.00. I can not power them on at all. I have tried to use osp to reflash the PDHC fpga, and it succeeds as it says, but apparently it does not work.
Any clues into
1. What I did wrong?
2. If I can recover on my own (this is a leftover server I wanted to use for a sandbox with HPVM, LPARs and NPARs, but that required newer firmware than 2005).

Re: Problems with FW/FPGA upgrade of rx7620
Proceed without asking for help.
Maybe you did not follow the instruction exactly enough.
Now it is likely really dead, sorry.
From the notes:
"CAUTION: Failure to follow these instructions exactly could place
your system in an unrecoverable state."
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Problems with FW/FPGA upgrade of rx7620
1. Thanks for letting me feel even better about myself ;-)
And granted, I should have asked in here first.
2. Can you help narrow it down?
I followed this
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=447687&swItem=pf-82061-1&prodNameId=346366&swEnvOID=54&swLang=13&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=1
3. I started out with
PROGRAMMABLE HARDWARE :
System Backplane : GPM FM OSP
------- ------- -------
1.002 1.002 1.002
PCI-X Backplane : LPM HS
------- -------
2.000 1.000

2.008 2.008
LPM PDHC
------- -------
Cell 0 : 1.002 1.007
Cell 1 : 1.002 1.007
FIRMWARE:
Core IO
Master : A.006.012
Event Dict. : 1.009
Slave : A.006.012
Event Dict. : 1.009
Cell 0
PDHC : A.003.023
Pri SFW : 1.025 (IA)
Sec SFW : 0.018 (IA)
Cell 1
PDHC : A.003.023
Pri SFW : 1.025 (IA)
Sec SFW : 0.018 (IA)
4. I then fw upgrade the two mps. Got
Firmware Update has completed successfully for all entities.
and
PROGRAMMABLE HARDWARE :
System Backplane : GPM FM OSP
------- ------- -------
1.002 1.002 1.002
PCI-X Backplane : LPM HS
------- -------
2.000 1.000

Cell 1
PDHC : A.003.023
Pri SFW : 1.025 (IA)
Sec SFW : 0.018 (IA)
5. It puzzled me that I couldn't see that the MPs was upgraded but followed the reciepe
and upgraded the dict.
Got
Firmware Update has completed successfully for all entities.
6. I could see the dicts was upgraded with sysrev and upgraded the pdhc firmwares. I could not see the pdhc firmwares being upgraded, still listed 3.023, but again, the procedure above did not state very much about if I should see them being upgraded before I cycled the power.
7. A bit faster I did sfw also listed as successfull.
8. And then I took pdhc.osp and that also updated successfully.
9. Thinking (and it might be here I was wrong ;-), I thought "everything has said ok up until now. I have updated the pdhc fw and fpga code and the things stated in the document above, I would have thought it would have shown in sysrev, but I did see the successfull all the way along, I'll cycle the power". Initially I thought it went fine, as the MPs came up and all, but the first indication came when sysrev took almost a minute to return.
So besides I should have asked before I embarked, can it be narrowed down, where it went wrong?

Re: Problems with FW/FPGA upgrade of rx7620
The procedure described in this section is consistent with updating an rx8620 or rx7620 server from version 5.1 to 5.2.
And the previous version
The procedure described in this section is consistent with updating an rx8620 or rx7620 server from version 4.0 to 5.1.
Can I find all the versions of the rx7620 firmwares online to see how far back I should have gone?

Re: Problems with FW/FPGA upgrade of rx7620
At the moment I have
[booze-cons] MP:CM> sysrev
Cabinet firmware revision report
PROGRAMMABLE HARDWARE :
System Backplane : GPM FM OSP
------- ------- -------
1.004 1.002 1.002
PCI-X Backplane : LPM HS
------- -------
2.000 1.000
Core IO : Master Slave
-------- -------
2.008 2.008
LPM PDHC
------- -------
Cell 0 : 1.002 1.010
Cell 1 : 1.002 1.010
FIRMWARE:
Core IO
Master : A.007.002
Event Dict. : 1.012
Slave : A.007.002
Event Dict. : 1.012
Cell 0
PDHC : A.003.031
Pri SFW : 3.066 (IA)
Sec SFW : 8.022 (IA)
Cell 1
PDHC : A.003.031
Pri SFW : 3.066 (IA)
Sec SFW : 8.022 (IA)
That is an mixture of my original 3.30 and the 5.2 that I tried to upgrade to and the 4.0 I downgraded to after 5.2 to get things working.
So what to do next? Cycle the power physically, to see what I end up with?
And then upgrade all the osp files to 4.0?
And then all the fw files?

Re: Problems with FW/FPGA upgrade of rx7620
When upgrading sx1000 systems I have found the following steps to be useful as a general guide:
- Set all cells to BIB using RR command.
- Leave DC power on and use OSP to update the CIO and cells FPGA PDHC
- Power DC Off and then use FW to update MP, PDHC and SFW firwmare.
- Cycle AC lines

Re: Problems with FW/FPGA upgrade of rx7620
You need to follow the instructions strictly, otherwise the system can be dead, as you know now.
The difficulty is, that sometimes the instructions are made for the update from the previous to the current version.
If you updating from a very old version, you need to review all the notes for the versions between...
Hope this helps!

Torsten.
