Purchasing memeory for an rx7620

I want to add 8 Gig of memory to our rx7620 (running hp-ux 11.23). Should I just buy 8 Gig in the largest units possible thereby giving me expansion options in the future or should I purchase the same size modules that already exist in the system i.e. 1GB cards. If I do that, I've filled all the slots. Is there a real and noticeable performance hit if I mix module sizes ?

This is the current config...

DIMM Location Size(MB) State Serial Num Part Num
-------------------- -------- ------- ---------------- ------------------
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 0A 1024 Config ---------------- A6098-60101
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 0B 1024 Config ---------------- A6098-60101
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 1A 1024 Config ---------------- A6098-60101
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 1B 1024 Config ---------------- A6098-60101
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 2A 1024 Config ---------------- A6098-60101
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 2B 1024 Config ---------------- A6098-60101
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 3A 1024 Config ---------------- A6098-60101
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 3B 1024 Config ---------------- A6098-60101
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 4A ---- ---- ---- ----
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 4B ---- ---- ---- ----
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 5A ---- ---- ---- ----
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 5B ---- ---- ---- ----
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 6A ---- ---- ---- ----
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 6B ---- ---- ---- ----
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 7A ---- ---- ---- ----
Cab 0 Cell 1 DIMM 7B ---- ---- ---- ----

Best regards,

Richard.

Hi!!

You could do it either way. If you don't want to load it up, get some 4GB module, (2 X 2GB DIMMs, hp part # AB308A.) Remember to put the higher MB DIMMs in the lower slots, (0A/B, 1A/B, etc,) and move the lower size one's down. Just adding them to the cell in the higher positions, (4A/B, etc,) can cause performance issues.

Hope this helps.

Re: Purchasing memeory for an rx7620

Buy memory cards of 1Gb each(A6098-60101).
already 8 slots are empty in existing cell.

Sudhakar,
If I use all the slots I won't have any slots left :-)
I'd prefer to use the highest spec cards available as long as I'm not compromising performance .

Richard.

Re: Purchasing memeory for an rx7620

How about this:

16GB high-density SyncDRAM memory module AB322A

... if you need 8gig only:

8GB high-density SyncDRAM memory module AB309A

Hope this helps!

Re: Purchasing memeory for an rx7620

Thanks for the info about cards. I was really after an explanation about the pay-off between using lots of cards v. fewer cards/mixed cards.

Given that the quality of the card itself was the same, would I expect to see better performance from 1 * 16GB or 16 * 1GB. Or would it depend on what sort of App I was running ?

I this case it's basically an Oracle db server.

Re: Purchasing memeory for an rx7620

The memory modules for this servers are "quads" - 4 dimms are 1 module.

the 8GB module consists of 4x 2GB dimms.

4GB dimms cannot be mixed with other modules.

In general many dimms = best performance

Re: Purchasing memeory for an rx7620

Excellent Torsten,

That doc is really useful.

If I got rid of the 8*1GB DIMMs and replaced them with 4*4GB DIMMs do you think I would see much difference in system performance due to using only half the slots that were being used previously ?
