RX16xx HDD Bays - SCSI-ID Query

Hi,

After several months looking after a set of RX16xx servers, I've found HP's related documents are wide-ranging, comprehensive & clear BUT for one vital missing detail, which is :-

The 2 x internal HDD bays are clearly documented as RH Bay (HDD 1 / Slot 0), and LH Bay (HDD 2 / Slot 1).

This is fine, but nowhere can I find an EXPLICIT STATEMENT about the SCSI-ID for each slot.

It seems highly likely that Slot 0 corresponds to 0/1/1/0.0.0 (Target 0, Lun 0), and Slot 1 corresponds to 0/1/1/0.1.0 (Target 1, Lun 0). However, to PROVE this I'll have to resort to pulling one of the disks to see which one goes "No Hardware". Or, I could make one drive only very busy and watch the activity light (bit hammy).

I'd much rather have an HP document to define the SCSI-ID vs slot relationship, so I know which physical disk is which. (Many years in IT tells me one crunch day I'll need to know that !!)

Sincere thanks to anyone who can point me to the right place.

Thanks & regards to all readers !

Kevin Thomson.

BTW, seems to be the same problem with the 3 x bays on RX2620; two of them are on the same SCSI bus, but the SCSI-ID is not declared.

Re: RX16xx HDD Bays - SCSI-ID Query

HI,

the left slot on the rx1600 is
0/1/1/0.1.0
the right slot is
0/1/1/0.0.0

Run "ioscan -fne" and compare with table on page 130:

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: RX16xx HDD Bays - SCSI-ID Query

Regarding the SCSI IDs on a rx2620, see figure 1-4 here:
http://docs.hp.com/en/AD117-9003A/AD117-9003A.pdf

(0, 1, 2 from bottom to top - 2 at the bottom are on the same bus, top slot is on another)

Hope this helps!

Re: RX16xx HDD Bays - SCSI-ID Query

RX2620: with reference to the upper disk which is on a seperate bus to the other two disks, the upper disk shares the same bus as the external "onboard" SCSI connection. Therefore, you need to ensure that any SCSI devices connected don't use an ID of 2.
Also, it is not recommended to have a Tape drive connected to this external connection if you do indeed have the upper slot occupied by a disk.

Re: RX16xx HDD Bays - SCSI-ID Query

Hello Kevin!

The 'hammy method' you refer to has worked for me for years in these scenarios:

dd if=/dev/dsk/c1t0d0 of=/dev/null

Then go look at which disk LED is solid on.

These are (presumably) only system disks, so a few seconds heavy IO to one isn't going to really spoil the party (unless you're using these disks for application data as well)

Re: RX16xx HDD Bays - SCSI-ID Query

Hello, valuable help from several good guys above, I'm sincerely grateful. I needed the details as part of a document delivery deadline, the pressure is now off a bit and time to reply with thanks - my apology for not responding sooner.

Actually, feeling a little silly, because I thought the SCSI-ID detail was not published, but Torsten found it readily available in a PDF which I must have missed; thank you !

I'll find out how to work the points system now, so you gentlemen get something more tangible than a bit of flattery !!

Thanks to all, Kevin Thomson.

Sometimes the information is well hidden (user guide, install guide , upgrade guide ...).

Regarding points, read this:

Have fun!
