RX2620 U320 SCSI firmware upgrade problem

Hi,
Trying to upgrade the firmware on Ultra320 SCSI Controller from version 1.03.35.65 to 1.03.35.69, using the EFI pscsi command produces "Skipping Controller seq:00 Bus:20 Dev:01 since a flash part is not present".
I need to do this upgrade in order to upgrade to HP-UX v3.

Re: RX2620 U320 SCSI firmware upgrade problem

Hi,

if hp-ux is currently installed, use "mputil":

http://www.docs.hp.com/en/J6373-90023/ch04s05.html

If there is no OS, use the
HP IPF Offline Diagnostics and Utilities CD
from http://software.hp.com

The firmware applies to HP A7173A
and the HP AB290A U320 SCSI controllers.

See the readme file too.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: RX2620 U320 SCSI firmware upgrade problem

Looking at the pscsi message, it seems that you did select "SCSI Ultra320 Core-IO" instead of A7173A adapter. When you select "Download and Install Firmware image" option of pscsi, you would see a list having core IO and A7173A . The "flash part" colume would be "Yes" for A7173A which should be selected for the this firmware upgrade. The same applies to AB290A adapter which has also flash memory component.

Take a look at this link

Re: RX2620 U320 SCSI firmware upgrade problem

Sameer, you are absolutely right, I clicked on the "..Core IO.." line because pscsi would not let me select anything else, so I thought that was how it should be. I only get two lines on the list, one which says "...Bus:20 Dev:01..", and the other one is the "SCSI Ultra320 Core-IO" line. I can not include the actual text because that means bring down the server..
I attach mptutil and msv2v3check output.
Thanks for the help so far..

Re: RX2620 U320 SCSI firmware upgrade problem

Ahh!! It sounds like you don't see the A7173A/AB209A adapter at all using pscsi EFI utlity.

Looking at the mputil output, EFI Driver Version 1.04.02.00 is currently installed on the HBA and VPD data is not on the card (I think VPD should be on the card). I do suspect that pscsi can't identify the card as there is no VPD on the card or a problem with pscsi version you are using.

I would suggest to download the latest EFI driver 1.05.02.00 and SCSI firmware 1.03.35.69 from this link http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=331470&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=331468&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=54
in a common directory and use the latest pscsi version 1.02.03.00 ( This is available with EFI driver download )to install the firmware.

As mentioned in the pscsi.txt file, the recommended way of firmware upgrade is using offline CDROM procedure. Remember EFI driver upgrade can only be done offline.

Re: RX2620 U320 SCSI firmware upgrade problem

Again, consider to use

http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=IPF0706

or this

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=447331&prodNameId=441910&swEnvOID=1060&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=is-38986-7

The SmartSetup CD contains a offline firmware update manager too.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: RX2620 U320 SCSI firmware upgrade problem

Sorry about the delay...

IPF0706 CD is on its way to me...

I will post again as soon as I try the offline method of fw upgrade.

Re: RX2620 U320 SCSI firmware upgrade problem

Hello again,

IPF0706 CD and the offline upgrade method does not work. In short, online or offline, I don't get a line that I can select and say "upgrade"...

"mptutil /dev/mpt2" produces the following..

---- FIRMWARE INFORMATION ----------------------------------------------------

SCSI Firmware Version : 1.03.35.65 IO
SCSI Firmware Version (Hex) : 1.03.23.41 IO
SCSI Firmware Size : 39968
EFI Driver Version : 1.04.02.00

---- V P D I N F O R M A T I O N -------------------------------------------

No VPD data on card.

This may be a sill question but: Can this controller be embedded on the main board and "not upgradeable" ?

Thanks..

Re: RX2620 U320 SCSI firmware upgrade problem

I do think you are right here. The SCSI Ultra320 being shown is 2 channel embedded controller and is a part of the Internal Core I/O. As per the documentation, pscsi can only be used with external Core IO in this case which has a compatible/supported HBA installed on a PCI/X slot like A7173A or AB290A and who have flash components to upgrade the firmware.

http://docs.hp.com/en/AD117-9001A/ch01s02.html#chdhceeh

It looks like, since there is a no flash component on embedded scsi controller, it's firmware can't be upgraded using mputil or pscsi.

Now coming back to using msv2v3check utility, it would intersting to put this case to HP Support and see what they say. I would think if the server is at latest firmware level, you can still able to install HP-UX 11.31
