RX2660 Memory - what works?

I have a used RX2660, with 2 x 1GB PC2-5300 memory, which works.

I tried to use 2 x 4GB PC2-4200 memory separately and that does not work at all. The error in the Event Log says MEM_DIMM_TYPE_INCOMPATIBLE, besides some other MEM_BUS_PARITY_ERROR and SYSTEM_FIRMWARE_ERROR.

The specs call for RC2-4200 memory.

It seems to be an early RX2660, with 2 1.6GHz single core CPUs.

What gives?

Hi Stephen,

Could you please post the following:

MP>SL> SEL Logs (system Event log) and MP:CM>Sysrev .

That would be helpful to identify the issue..

HTH,

Surendar

Re: RX2660 Memory - what works?

According to the quickspecs the memory is

chip spare PC2 4200 ECC x4 single rank Registered DDR2 SDRAM memory pair

so you need dimms that can do chip spare (original hp parts are recommended, of course).

See section "Supported Memory Options"

in http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12698_div/12698_div.HTML

It will be always good to stay current with firmware too.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: RX2660 Memory - what works?

Both memories are ECC type.

The firmware is the most recent available from HP.

The specs say nothing about supporting PC2-5300. I have been told that it should support the speeded up 5300 memory.

Re: RX2660 Memory - what works?

ECC is not enough - chip spare is important!

Re: RX2660 Memory - what works?

The problem now is that I sent the PC2-4200 memory back before and can't check any specs on the board. The supplier seems to refuse to answer any questions or admit to anything.  He did refund my money.

Thank you all.
