Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

Thanks very much for the reply.
The RX7640 I am talking about came with only one full height DVD drive and that creates some confusions: Is it only one server or a two in one server ?

As the site engineer, how can I clarify this ?

Thanks

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

Connect to the MP and run

MP:CM> cp

This will show you if you have 1 or 2 nPars.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

Thanks for your reply.

Asuming that it is 2 npars, how would the single DVD-Drive usage be ? Is there a way to share the DVD drive between the two servers ? How would I install the OS on each of the two since we have only one DVD Drive ?

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

This server can have either 1 half hight or 2 slimline DVD drives. With only 1 drive only 1 partition has access.

You need either 2 slimeline drives or an external drive.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

Hello,

if the server was Built To Order, it will already be divided into partitions (if two npar configuration was requested) and the OS will already be installed. If this is not the case, you can use Ignite-UX server to install the OS if you don't have the two slim DVD config.

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

Hi,

After entering CM: cp , only one partition is shown : Partition0. Moreover after powering on the server only cell1 green light at the front panel comes ON, cell0 light does not show any sign of life.

Does it mean that I have only one cell in the rx7640 instead of 2 ?

What should I do to create a second partition if possible ?

According to this you have only 1 cell board installed.

Hope this helps!

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

To set-up a second hard partition you need some hardware. You need a cell board, a core I/O, at least one dual core CPU, the two slimline dvd roms, & some memory to set up the second partition. Below are the part numbers you need.

AB313A Cell Board
AB315A Core I/O
AD368A, AD365A, AB584A, or AB451A Dual core 1.6GHz CPU or AD362A 1.4GHz
AD013A slim DVD-ROM
AB454A 4GB, AB455A 8GB kits

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

Thanks for all your reply. Your replies have really enlightened me.

My sales manager says that since the rx7640 has been shipped with 8 processors, there should be a way of virtualising the systems to behave as two in one server (4 processors each), even with only one cell board. I told him that cannot be possible with hard partitionning except we purchase at least a second cell board. He said I should research on soft partitionning to find a way to get at least 2 servers in one.

Please does any of you know of a soft partitioning or a kind of virtualization that can make a single cell board rx7640 behaves as two or more seperate servers ?

Thanks and Best Regards,

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

you can do it the virtual partition way (Vpar) but you are going to pay $1,708.00 (USD) per CPU core for the license from HP.

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

Thanks very much for your reply.

According to the invoice and the packing list, the rx7640 was shipped with 4 cores.
ioscan -fnC processor shows 8 processors
SAM - Performance Monitor - Systems Monitor also shows 8 processors.
The license cost will be $1708 * 4 or $1708 * 8 ?

How can I identify the licenses for Vpars in case they were also shipped among the several boxes that came with the rx7640 ?

As Rx7640 also supports MS Windows on npars, does it support windows on Vpars ?

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

The $1708.00 per CPU was for the HP-UX Vpar per core license. If that's what you need, then you are looking at 8 cpus, so 8 x $1708. I don't know what the license is for Windows, sorry, I primarily know HP-UX & MPE

I attached a Vpar overview that might answer some of your questions.

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

vPars works only with hp-ux.

Multi OS in virtualization is possible with HP Integrity Virtual machines.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Setting up a new HP RX7640 for the 1st time

Yes you should go for HP Integrity Virtual Machines if you need virtual servers running Windows. Also I think that the license for HPVM will be cheaper than the vpars license.
