Setup H/W Raid on rx3600 for 8 disks

We have 8 drives on a rx3600 with a PCI-X 8-port SAS Controller Card (AB036B 006) i.e., with no Raid configured, how can we configure controller to mirror 4 primary to 4 secondary disks or do we have to utilize LVM/Mirror as we only have Base VxVM.

Re: Setup H/W Raid on rx3600 for 8 disks

The default internal SAS controller can only create and operate 2 sets of mirrored pairs + a global hot spare.

For the remaining disks you may use LVM or consider to upgrade the internal SAS controller to the smartarray P400.

Hope this helps!

Re: Setup H/W Raid on rx3600 for 8 disks

Shalom,

Hardware raid is set up and controlled by the bios of the system.

Boot it.

Watch at console. I think F8 will put you into the mode where you can configure the smart controller.

This type of arrangement is invisible to the OS. There will be no need for software based mirroring after this. Also hardware based mirror such as this will lower overhead on the system.

Re: Setup H/W Raid on rx3600 for 8 disks

The internal SAS controller is a LSI chip, not a smartarray controller.

AB036B 006 = no RAID configured.

The F8 (in fact it is ESC 8) works only for smartarray controllers. The way to configure the internal SAS is different.

Have a look:

Re: Setup H/W Raid on rx3600 for 8 disks

I had scanned through this manual and this confirms "what I thought I read". As I am new to rx3600's and SAS drives (experience limited to A500's, DS2405 JBODs and LVM), What is the best way to configure drives to take advantage of newer technology?

Re: Setup H/W Raid on rx3600 for 8 disks

IMHO a hardware RAID is always easy to handle. If a disk fails, just exchange the disk and you are done.

Replacing a SAS disk under LVM control is much more difficult.

But since you can have only 4 disks mirrored with this controller (2x RAID1 - 2 mirrored pairs), you have to use the remaining 4 disks directly with LVM anyway.

This is not a problem, if you are aware of the procedures.

So it is up to you, you can setup the hardware mirror or even use all disks directly with LVM.

The procedure is here (it is different for 11.23 vs. 11.31):

http://docs.hp.com/en/J6369-90070/ch04s05.html

Hope this helps!
