Slow Performance of SQL2005 on Itanium Rx4640
can anyone justify why SQL2005 giving slow performance on Itanium RX4640 as compared to AMD Opetron?

Re: Slow Performance of SQL2005 on Itanium Rx4640
Given that you can't put an AMD Opteron in a rx4640, there must be some other differences between the 2 servers in question (and maybe the storage as well) - care to actually share any of them?
Otherwise you are effectively saying "can anyone justify why a Honda is faster than a Toyota"

Re: Slow Performance of SQL2005 on Itanium Rx4640
Hi,
i am not a sql expert but for some type of job (query,job profile.. whatever is the right naming) the CPU frequency is more importent then the scalability and I/O performance features of the processor.
Since Itanium cpu's typically have lower core frequency then the Intel XEON or AMD one's it can be that for certain tasks you will have a better result.
The RX4640 exists in these 3 main CPU flavors i believe:
- MX2 -> at 1,2 Ghz
- MAD9M -> at 1,6 Ghz
- Montecito dual core -> at 1,6 Ghz
and different cache sizes also, so have to take that into consideration also when comparing.
There are also quit some customization and SQL tuning parameters that can play a huge role in performance.
HTH

Re: Slow Performance of SQL2005 on Itanium Rx4640
the below is a bit more acurate and detailed, it is taken from the quickspec's
and lists the different CPU flavors and cache sizes a RX4640 can have.
- Four Dual-Core Intel Itanium 2 processor; either 1.6-GHz/24-MB L3 cache or 1.6-GHz/18-MB L3 cache
- Four Single-Core Intel Itanium 2 processor; either 1.5 GHz/4MB L3 cache or 1.6 GHz/6 MB L3 cache, 1.6 GHz/9 MB L3 cache processors
-or HP mx2 two processor module* (contains two 1.1 GHz Itanium 2 processors/one core each)
128 GB PC2100 ECC Registered DDR266A/B SDRAM (32├Г 4-GB DIMMs)
