Telnet to MP fails - max number of active telnet sessions

Hi,

When attempting a telnet to the MP of an integrity or PA system, I'm seeing:

Sorry, the maximum number of active telnet sessions has been reached. Please try again later.

Background: an administrator is running a program remotely that periodically logs in to the MP and runs a few commands to check the temperature status and then generates a report.

This program has been running fine for some time but now it appears to have been leaving behind open connections and we've hit a limit. All of the systems that were monitored this way now have this issue.

1. How can I clear this situation?
2. Is there a configuration parameter that can be set to close inactive telnet sessions?
3. Can the MP be reset while the OS runs?

Thanks for any help,
Dave

Re: Telnet to MP fails - max number of active telnet sessions

Dave,

there is a maximum of 32 sessions in parallel. Best idea is to log off every time when things are done (press "x" in mp's main menu). You can reset the MP without any effect to running os by typing

stty +resetGSP

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Telnet to MP fails - max number of active telnet sessions

Thanks Torsten,

I used the stty command to reset the MP but that did not appear to clear the current telnet connections as I still have the same error.

Would you have expected this to clear the active connections? If not, can you suggest another way?

Re: Telnet to MP fails - max number of active telnet sessions

First, you should test if the MP is still working:

stty +queryGSP
If you can't telnet to the MP, you should use a serial terminal (laptop with hyperterminal, reflection or something). Connection settings:
8/none (parity)
9600 baud
None (receive)
None (transmit)

Check existing sessions by typing "ls" (LAN status) in command menu (CM).

Use the "DI" command to disconnect sessions.
You can try to reset the MP from here
("XD" -> "r"). This is disconnecting all open sessions.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Telnet to MP fails - max number of active telnet sessions

correction:

type "who" in CM menu to show connected users.
BTW, what type of system and version of firmware you have? (Version can be determined by typing "sysrev" in CM menu)

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Telnet to MP fails - max number of active telnet sessions

Hi Again Torsten,

The stty +resetGSPs didn't do the trick and I found that I could not connect through a direct serial connection! Strange.

I ultimately got back into the systems by physically resetting the GSP/MPs.

The systems are a mix of rx2600s and rp2470s. Problem is happening on both.

rx2600s -
MP FW : E.02.10
BMC FW : 01.40
EFI FW : 01.22
System FW : 01.82

rp2470s -

Re: Telnet to MP fails - max number of active telnet sessions

Hi Dave,

the firmware of your servers is some years old. I would suggest to update. Current version for System firmware is revision 2.31, BMC firmware revision 1.53, and MP firmware revision E.03.13 for hp Integrity rx2600 Server. Look for PF_CPEAKSYS0231A.zip on HP's website.
For rp24xx current PDC is 43.50 (PF_CHAW4350). It's a good idea to have current firmware, espacially for Itanium. But if your problem occurs on all your servers, please verify your script.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
