does rx2660 with HP UX allow raid 10 (1+0) config with internal drives

Hi,

Does rx2660 with HP UX allow raid 10 (1+0) config using internal drives? HP document (quickspecs) only says that using SA P400 controller, you can have RAID 1, 5 and 6 configurations (although the SA P400 support doc for HP UX says it can do RAID 1+0 as well). Then there is also SA P800 which the doc says is supported but does not specify which RAID levels can be implemented.

Please help advise.

Sincerely,

Rajan

Hi,

When you are using hardware RAID, the RAID controller would act as a mask in between the OS and the physical Hard disks. Its really doesn't matter for OS, which RAID level you are using. Only thing is your OS should recognize the hardware RAID controller. If the the OS is capable of detecting and communicating with the controller, you can choose any RAID levels.

thanks. but why does HP specify only raid levels 1, 5 and 6 supported with P400 in the rx2660 quickspecs? i need to be absolutely sure raid 1+0 is supported as planning 3 systems for deployment and has been specifically asked for by software vendor.

Hi,

Some hardware features would be tested and certified by both vendors, where as other features are just supported. This may be the reason. I am no sure but sharing my thoughts.

Re: does rx2660 with HP UX allow raid 10 (1+0) config with internal drives

rajan,

looking at this link i would stick with the p800 , all raid levels, hp-ux and rx2660 supported (although one of the support pages linked to this gives a contradictory opinion)

http://www.hp.com/products1/serverconnectivity/storagesnf2/sas/index.html

good luck

Re: does rx2660 with HP UX allow raid 10 (1+0) config with internal drives

Thanks guys for all the input. Have concluded that raid 10 is not supported on rx2660 with HP UX using internal drives, even with P800. Thanks again.

Re: does rx2660 with HP UX allow raid 10 (1+0) config with internal drives

Hi,

I think the servers quickspecs doesn't differentiate between raid 1 and 0+1, but if you read the P400 qs, you find:

"RAID 1, 1+0 (Drive Mirroring): This allocates half of the drive array to data and the other half to mirrored data, providing two copies of every file. It is a high-performance RAID"

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12400_div/12400_div.html

and even the

HP Smart Array P400 and P800 Controller
for Integrity Servers Support Guide
HP-UX 11i v2 and 11i v3

says

"...
RAID level can be 0, 1, 1+0, 5, or ADG."

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

There is a lot of ambiguity in info provided by HP, so am taking a safer route and going for external storage enclosure.

Please see

http://docs.hp.com/en/J6369-90072/ch01s06.html

IMHO there is absolutely no problem in inserting the drives and create the RAID with "saconfig" command.

Note: The P400 is for internal drives only.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
