firmware recovery procedure on integrity (rx1620)

Hi

In my attempt to upgrade a rx1620 to the latest firmware level it went wrong.

The bmc firmware was loaded and checksummed. The system firmware was also loaded and checksummed. The MP firmware however started to load, but after a short while the fans started to spin and nothing happened on the console. After waiting 20 minutes (as stated the whole update procedure could take 20 minutes), I reset the MP.

Now the machine will not come up. It starts to initialize, the dvd drive blinks and then I get a red light in led2. and the sequence starts all over.

Is there any way that I can recover from this? Being a testserver we do not have warrenty/support any more, so any help would be greatly appriciated.

Re: firmware recovery procedure on integrity (rx1620)

Have you tried doing the firmware update again using the MP menu?
I guess there is an ftp option available for doing firmware upgrade through MP.

This really looks like a dead MP, sorry.

Hope this helps!

Well. As I stated the MP does not work.
Torsten, how do they get the firmware loaded onto the system initially?

Re: firmware recovery procedure on integrity (rx1620)

I don't know.

A FW update for the MP should look like this:

Updating MP firmware image...

After updating, the MP will reset, and the MP console will be disconnected.
You will need to reconnect to the MP manually.
.

MP component 1
Downloading MP File E0330.bin
...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Checksumming downloaded image
..................................................
Writing MP component
............................................................
............................................................
............................................................
............................................................
............................................................
............................................................
...................................

MP component 2
Downloading MP File version.dat

Checksumming downloaded image

Writing MP component
........

MP component 3
Downloading MP File Resources.out
.................
Checksumming downloaded image
..................
Writing MP component
............................................................
............................................................
.........................

-> MP firmware upgrade complete - Web and telnet connections will
be dropped. MP will now reset....

MP Download Finished

======================

Meanwhile you can try to run the server without the MP, try to connect to the serial console port (not the MP).

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: firmware recovery procedure on integrity (rx1620)

Hi Torsten

Yeah it should look like that, but unfortunatly it did not. Stopped at the loading part and then it just hanged...

Well, I guess the server is dead. I get nothing on the serial console either.

Actually surprises me that it can go that bad....

Will close thread. Thanks for your input.

Re: firmware recovery procedure on integrity (rx1620)

I pulled out the MP card/cable and the server then booted. Ofcourse without MP, but nevertheless it booted just fine.

Re: firmware recovery procedure on integrity (rx1620)

Got the server up and running again. The MP is toast however, but lesson learned is that if you have a dead MP, the server will not boot, just gives a red led2, for firmware problems.

Pulling out the mp made the bmc and system firmware happy again and made the server boot.
