hp9000/rx3600

Hi,

I want to known if is possible to configure 4 internal disks of 73 Gb each one(DG072ABAB3) of one integrity server with a RAID configuration.

It's very strange because i don't have a raid tarjet, but i have this doubt. I'm running hpux 11.23.

Thank's in advance.

Re: hp9000/rx3600

It's a bit difficult with this system, because it can have either the integrated SAS controller with or without a configured RAID or it can have the P400 smartarray controller.
Depending on this the RAID options are different too.

Please post an "ioscan -fn" first.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: hp9000/rx3600

Hi Ivan:

a) You can't raid 1 or 5 your boot disks. You can raid 1, or mirror them, and raid 1 or mirroring is the recommended format of the manufacturer for boot disks.

b) HP-UX uses LVM or VXVM. In LVM you can raid 0 or stripe across 4 disks w/out parity. Raid 0 has some disadvantages to raid 5 but raid 5 isn't offered in LVM. LVM offers only Raid 0 and 1. So what type of logical volume utility are you using? LVM or VXVM?

c) VXVM offers raid 0, 1 and 5. Typically, I'll raid 5 my database and raid 0+1 my archive logs for speed. If you have vmvm and choose raid 10 then you'll stripe 2 disks and mirror those 2 to disks 3 and 4.

Re: hp9000/rx3600

Ok, I'm using LVM, and in order to configure some kind of RAID configuration on my boot disks, my only option is defining a mirror scheme for my data's volume groups, right ??.

In resume if i want to establish a RAID 5 configuration by hardware, i need to install some aditional card to the server.

Re: hp9000/rx3600

You do have a SAS controller so you could HW raid 1 at the controller level. This would require you to wipe your system and start over though.

Otherwise your other options are SW raid,
LVM=Raid0
LVM w/MirrorUX = Raid1 or Distributed 0+1
VxVM = Raid 0/1/5

But frankly you do not have much disk to do anything with. The OS needs 2 drives (mirrored) which leaves you with 2 drives for something else.

Re: hp9000/rx3600

Yes, and here's a procedure to follow as well as an attachment. The attachment is called 'When Good Disks Go Bad'. Refer to pages 26 and 27 for this procedure and save this attachment for future HP-UX Biblical references. :-)

Mirroring the Root Volume on Integrity Servers
The procedure to mirror the root disk on Integrity servers is similar to the procedure for PA-RISC servers. The difference is that Integrity server boot disks are partitioned; you must set up the partitions, copy utilities to the EFI partition, and use the HP-UX partition device files for LVM commands.
For this example, the disk is at hardware path 0/1/1/0.1.0, with a device special file named /dev/rdsk/c2t1d0.

1. Partition the disk using the idisk command and a partition description file.

a. Create a partition description file. For example:
# vi /tmp/pdf
In this example the partition description file contains:
3
EFI 500MB
HPUX 100%
HPSP 400MB

b. Partition the disk using idisk and the partition description file created in step 1a:
# idisk -f /tmp/pdf -w /dev/rdsk/c2t1d0
To verify that your partitions are correctly laid out, run the following command:
# idisk /dev/rdsk/c2t1d0

2. Use the insf command with the -e option to create the device files for all the partitions. For example:
# insf -e -H 0/1/1/0.1.0
You should now have the following device files for this disk:

/dev/dsk/c2t1d0 The entire disk (block access)
/dev/rdsk/c2t1d0 The entire disk (character access)
/dev/dsk/c2t1d0s1 The EFI partition (block access)
/dev/rdsk/c2t1d0s1 The EFI partition (character access)
/dev/dsk/c2t1d0s2 The HP-UX partition (block access)
/dev/rdsk/c2t1d0s2 The HP-UX partition (character access)
/dev/dsk/c2t1d0s3 The Service partition (block access)
/dev/rdsk/c2t1d0s3 The Service partition (character access)

Re: hp9000/rx3600

Yeap, that's a good reference. In fact my boot disks (vg00) are configured with this procedure.

I'm going to connect external disks to this server through fiber channel, and the other 4 internal disks will be used for other situation.

Thanks for your help.

Re: hp9000/rx3600

The last one,

How can i configure a RAID 1 by HW, using the SAS controller ??. Could you send me the procedure ??.
