rx7620 Core IO Replacement - invalid product name

Hello,
I had replaced a Core IO board (primary - slot 1) on an rx7620 server. I followed the typical steps:
- shutdown OS's
- replace card
- RR each nPar

However, both nPar's MCA'd and now when I reset the nPar each cell halts and reports an error:

Creator Product Name Invalid

I noted from the ID command that many values are not set.

MP modifiable stable complex configuration data fields.
Model String : 9000/800/rx7620
Complex System Name :
Original Product Number:
Current Product Number :
UUID : ffffffff-ffff-ffff-ffff-ffffffffffff
Creator Manufacturer : hp
Creator Product Name :
Creator Serial Number :
OEM Manufacturer :
OEM Product Name :
OEM Serial Number :
Diagnostic license : Disabled

I had thought that the this profile data would be copied from the cell boards to the MP when it was replaced? Other data, such as MP LAN/user and partition info copied over as expected.

What is seems like is that the only way to get around this is to have an HP engineer reset the data manually. Unlike the entry level systems there is no prompt to copy the data from another location, the cells halt.

Is this the case for any Core IO replacement on Integrity cell based servers?

Thanks for any help or insight.

-Bob

Did you switch off the server during replacement? How about the firmware of the new MP?

Hope this helps!

During replacement? No. When I noted that there were problems, yes that was something I had done (without any changes). The firmware was one rev behind on the new board. I am hesitant to try and update the board while the cells are in a halted state.

Here is the sysrev for those interested:

Re: rx7620 Core IO Replacement - invalid product name

Hi Robert,

Can you confirm the part number of the MP:

A9918-60001 for rx7620
A6793-60001 for rp74x0

Both MP├В s look the same.

Re: rx7620 Core IO Replacement - invalid product name

Hi Robert,

Actually you dont need to perform RR command. When you replace the MP card for master, the cell you need to shutdown is cell 0(npar1) only as cell 1 got slave MP card(even though you're using master to access both). The correct procedure is shutdown cell 0, replace the MP card and wait till the selftest is done then the complex profile will be restored.

I afraid when you using RR for each nPar, the complex profile will be reset for the cell board since the new MP dont have the current complex profile thus both side lost the info.

Re: rx7620 Core IO Replacement - invalid product name

Phil,
The A6793 part number is actually for the rp7410 server. The A9918 part is for the rp7420 and rx7620. There is firmware on the board for both Itanium and PA chipsets.

Desmond,
I was able to restore my old card so I do have my system ID info restored. From what you say, I should be able to install the new card by just shutting down the OS on that one partition and then replacing the core IO. I trust I will then just have to perform an RS on that nPar to get it rebooted?

I can give that a try, Ill let you know. Thanks for the info!

Re: rx7620 Core IO Replacement - invalid product name

I did as instructed and the results were the same. One thing to point out though:

I am not having partition profile problems. The partition configuration carries over just fine. I am only having problems getting the model/serial/UUID info to carry over to the new Core IO. Essentially the stable profile data.

Does the official core IO replacement process include manually restoring these fields using the MP ID command? I guess that is my question at this point.

Re: rx7620 Core IO Replacement - invalid product name

Bob,

Merely pointing out that there are different MP's for "similar" servers.
I have seen the wrong MP in the wrong server type before!

You are indeed correct that the complex profile and ID information should be transfered.......but unfortunatley this does not always happen.
Therefore you will indeed need an HP CE to update the details for ID.

Re: rx7620 Core IO Replacement - invalid product name

Hi Bob,

Supposely the complex profile, serial number, model + etc will be transfer over to the new MP after you done the replacement.

Do you power off the cell? Only shutdown the partition to replace the MP and dont power off cell or cabinet. After you insert the MP, you will see following messages on the screen:
Processor family change.
Resetting Complex Profile to
defaults..

And dont login to MP yet, please wait after 1 minutes only log in. If you still fail to get the serial id, then you have to do it manualy. Record the output of ID command before replace the new MP then after done the replacement, perform ID command to key in all the info but it required sskey and i afraid only HP personnel be able to do that.

Hope it will help you lots. Thanks

Re: rx7620 Core IO Replacement - invalid product name

Thanks to both for confirming what I had thought.

What I did not see was the "resetting complex profile to defaults" after the "Processor family change" (which I did see).

I did try two MP/Core IO boards with the same results, so I'll have HP reset the values for me.

Bob
