Want original IE Search pane back - not Overture

I'm using IE 6 xpsp2, WinXP sp1 on a Compaq nx9010

HP/Compaq has substituted the normal search pane in IE and I have an HP
search pane (powered by Overture)

I want to change this to the IE default. The HP pane doesn't have the change
Internet Search behavior link. Since it doesn't..

I tried to go to Windows Explorer, Open Search, Search the Internet, change
preferences, then I get the Change Interent Change Behavior and set it to "
With Classic Internet Search" and select another search engine.

The changes aren't reflected in Internet Explorer. The search pane is still
the HP search.

How can I restore the default IE behavior?

PS: I saw the option for LAN Settings, Atomatic Configuration Script and it was
pointing to a file on the HP site. http://autoconfig.cpqcorp.net I disabled
it but the problem remains.

Re: Want original IE Search pane back - not Overture

Go to:

http://www.infogrid.com/homepage.htm

at the bottom of the page you will find:

"How to Restore MSN Search Bar in Internet Explorer:
If you wish to restore MSN in your Internet Explorer Search Bar then simply run the linked 'REG' file. When you run this file Windows will ask if you wish to load the attached registry file. Then answer yes if you wish to restore MSN as your IE search assistant. If you have questions about which registry settings will be edited, download the file first and then you may use Notepad.Exe to view this file BEFORE you actually run it.

http://www.infogrid.com/IEBar/RestoreMSBar.REG "

The last line is a download. Download it and then double click on it. It should change your IE search back to MSN. If you want to go somewhere else then edit the file in notepad before clicking on it or edit the following registry keys manually with regedit.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Search Bar"="http://www.msn.com/access/allinone.htm"
"Search Page"="http://www.msn.com/access/allinone.htm"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
"SearchAssistant"="http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm"
"CustomizeSearch"="http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchcust.htm"

Just in case you might want to go back you might want to open regedit first and look at the keys so you will know what they say now. As usual make sure you have a recent backup in case you make a mistake while playing with the registry.

You could also add the google toolbar, and make google your default search engine.

The benefit is that the Google Toolbar automatically blocks pop-ups/pop-unders, besides just being a good tool.

Re: Want original IE Search pane back - not Overture

I would first get cleaned up
then import one of those default search regs
By posting a hijachthis log at
forums spywareinfo.com ,, instructions here>
What To Do If Your Browser Has Gone Crazy: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?act=ST&f=24&t=5187
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/IEFIX.reg

But you might not even have to import or
post a log,, on IE's toolbar hit the search icon then customize ????

Re: Want original IE Search pane back - not Overture

Thanks all for the replies!

Ron the reg entries were the appropriate solution. Thanks.

Jon - I'll look into the Google toolbar. From what I've seen, Yahoo (powered by Google) returns the same results mostly, but I'll check out the added features on the toolbar.

Lonny - Since it's already solved...
I'll check the site later.

Perhaps I should create a new thread, but...

You know, when you type a "?" followed by search keywords in the address textbox you get an MSN search engine results page.

Does anyone know if it's possible to select a different search engine to use, instead of MSN?

Thanks.

Re: Want original IE Search pane back - not Overture

The following instructions tell how to make google your search engine of choice. I believe you already have the Keys they mention so you probably don't have to make new ones, just change the old values to the new.

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main
Double-click the Search Page value, and in the Value data box enter http://www.google.com (overwriting the existing entry)
Select New > String Value from the Edit menu
Name the new value Search Bar
Double-click the Search Bar value, and in the Value data box enter http://www.google.com/ie
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ SearchURL
Double-click the (Default) value, and in the Value data box enter http://www.google.com/keyword/%s
Select the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer
Select New > Key from the Edit menu
Name the new key Search
With the Search key selected, Select Select New > String Value from the Edit menu
Name the new value SearchAssistant
Double-click the SearchAssistant value, and in the Value data box enter http://www.google.com/ie
Close the registry editor

Re: Want original IE Search pane back - not Overture

Thanks for the replies.

After the previous issue was solved, the Customize button was available on the searcn panel.

The dialog for customize included various options and a button for customizing "Autosearch settings" which is the search right out of the Address bar. I was able to select the search provider without having to go to the registry.

Thanks again.
