Industrial IoT insights from an Operations Technology expert
Operations technology blogger and industry influencer Gary Mintchell (@GaryMintchell) is not one to miss an opportunity to catch the latest in Internet of Things innovation, so December found him in Madrid for HPE Discover Madrid 2017, HPE’s premier technology event of the year. He shared his thoughts with readers of his publication The Manufacturing Connection – three snapshots that capture some of the excitement of the event:
HPE and ABB To Jointly Develop IT Solution. Posting directly from Discover, Gary shares some exciting news from the conference: HPE’s partnership with ABB, a leader in digitally connected and enabled industrial equipment and systems. The two companies will collaborate to deliver Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions that will “span the entire range of computing required by enterprises today, from the edge to the cloud to the core,” according to ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer. Gary provides a great overview of the partnership, which he calls “yet another example of the so-called IT/OT convergence where we are finally getting real interaction between operations and enterprise IT,” and explains why it’s a ground-breaking move for the future of hybrid IT and the IIoT.
Compute Power Meets IoT at HPE Discover 2017 in Madrid. A collection of Gary’s thoughts and impressions from the conference, including a discussion with fellow bloggers about a statement from HPE CEO Meg Whitman that “the Edge will eat the Cloud.” He also provides some notes on HPE’s strategic direction; comments on HPE GreenLake Edge Compute, HPE’s new on-premises, pay-per-use, services-inclusive edge solution; and notes on a business and technology overview from HPE’s David Chalmers.
Refinery of the Future with IoT. Gary moderated a Coffee Talk with fellow industry bloggers, HPE experts, and execs from Texmark Chemicals Inc., a Galena Park, Texas-based chemical processing and manufacturing company. He tells the story of how HPE helped Texmark develop advanced IIoT capabilities. The results: “better process analytics, increased up-time, uninterrupted productivity, satisfied customers, and safer workers.” That last achievement was key; workplace safety is an absolute priority at Texmark, and the company is justifiably proud of its record of 25 years with only one lost-time incident. If you’re in the chemical processing sector or you’re looking for ways to harness the IoT to build a safer workplace, this is a must-read.
