With the Internet of Things (IoT), many people think of sensors, devices, and web communication. But they often miss something just as important: the holistic convergence of operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT). OT encompasses a wide range of components such as infrastructure, monitoring systems, and other system enablers. This includes supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems to monitor networks, gateway computers, sensors and devices, and includes people, processes as well.

IT systems interface directly with people, and include desktop computers, mobile devices, and servers. The merging of sensors and devices with enterprise applications results in high-value IoT solutions, and requires IT and OT systems converge into a cohesive unit.

Challenges of IoT

Enterprises have growing interest in IoT to achieve value around data and analytics. Desired results include greater business value, innovation, efficiency, and cost and waste reduction through additional automation. IoT promises to engage customers and deliver new user experiences across industries.

However, we’re approaching a point where the number of smart devices connected to the internet will dwarf the number of people, and IoT is expected to generate more data than current technology can handle. Additionally, the convergence of mobility, cloud, and DevOps demands improved security, communications, and performance. To build relevant IoT solutions, you need to take a holistic approach to IoT, focusing on end-to-end solutions instead of just devices, servers, or data.

IoT Solutions Driven by Intel with HPE

Across industries, Intel technology lives in the heart of IoT, powering devices, servers and communications that make up the solutions. Additionally, Intel’s strong partnerships have helped shape the IoT landscape. For example, Intel and HPE are driving successful adoption of IoT to address issues such as seamless IT and OT integration, new security vulnerabilities, and cutting-edge technology integration with compelling economics. Partner solutions, such as HPE Pointnext, provide insight to address IoT challenges with a future-proof architecture and roadmap.

Knowing that 43% of all IoT data will be processed at the edge prior to being sent to a data center, HPE has defined the intelligent edge with its Edgeline Converged Systems, comprised of high performance edge compute, with Intel-based servers and storage, plus additional components from Aruba around mobility, security, interoperability, and compliance. HPE IoT solutions are being used to digitize existing manufacturing processes and improve process efficiency through smart-factory applications more adaptable to business change without upsetting ongoing operations.

However, no one company can succeed on their own, and IoT is an ecosystem-driven market. HPE delivers partnerships, IoT ecosystems, and an end-to-end approach for full product support. This includes strong cross-industry partnerships – e.g. with PTC, GE, Deloitte, and many more – and HPE’s proven and mature approach with its HPE Connect IoT initiative.

Intel Empowers Market-Ready IoT Solutions

The Intel IoT Market Ready program includes quality deployment-ready solutions from IoT ecosystem partners for vertical markets ripe for IoT innovation, including industrial, manufacturing, energy, transportation, retail and others.

Be sure to check out The Transformation Zone at HPE Discover in Madrid for more on innovation and the intelligent edge. Here, Rob Sheppard will be giving a 30-minute “Office Hours” presentation from 15:30-16:00 on Wednesday, Nov. 29th, followed by a 20 minute “Chalk Talk” from 16:00-16:20. Read more on Intel and HPE’s leadership with IoT Market Ready solutions in Intel’s IoT Solution Directory online.  And according to Aruba, 85% of organizations will have adopted IoT by 2019. Don’t be left disconnected.
