Reducing Latency and Accelerating Time-to-Insight


If something is physically closer, it is generally more easily and quickly accessible. This is the primary principle behind taking data center class IT, hardening it, and moving it out to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) edge, where the sources of data (e.g. “things”) reside. This is what I call our “Shift Left” strategy. We move proven enterprise-class processing, storage, virtualization, and systems management nearer to the data sources in order to mitigate latency to and from the cloud and accelerate insight and response time.

Building on this closer-is-faster principle, we further optimize the relationships between data capture and controls systems, as well as compute and storage by integrating them into the same box – a seamless framework. This “Coverged Edge” strategy is a revolutionary concept which converges the data acquisition and control systems under the same hood as the high-performance computing cores. This shift not only optimizes the use of vital compute capabilities, but it also accelerates operational processes across the board.

Hence, we have created the HPE “Shift Left and Converge” strategy for the IoT and Intelligent Edge.

This strategy affords both reduced time-to-insight and time-to-action, as significant latency is eliminated in two key ways: First, much less time and fewer transmissions are spent sending all data back to a remote cloud. Secondly, latency is significantly reduced between the data acquisition systems and the compute, in addition to the compute and the control systems, because they all reside in the same box. Now, these advances are profound, but they are merely scratching the surface.

In addition to less latency, there are many other advantages of the “Shift Left and Converge” approach to infrastructure at the edge. In fact, we portion the benefits of “Shift Left” into seven categories, which coincide with an additional seven benefits of “Convergence” at the edge:

Of course not all enterprises will appreciate, need, or realize all fourteen of these benefits. However, many can and will. Thus, Hewlett Packard Enterprise has created a new product category called Converged Edge Systems, introducing the HPE Edgeline family of systems. The EL4000 and EL4000 are the industry’s first converged systems and HPE’s first entrants into this pioneering category of products.
