HP 2920-48G Switch (J9728A) Redundancy without Stacking module

Hi all,

I'm new on this forum and handling HP switches, please bear with me :)

Ok, I have a task to have Switch redundancy and we have this 2 HP 2920-48G Switch (J9728A). I've search on how to have a redundancy for this switches and most of it are recommending to use stacking module to make it one logical switch. The problem is, I can't get approval yet on a budget for buying the stacking module so I want to have another solution for redundancy without this stacking module.

This is the setup I made:

HP 2920-48G Switch (J9728A) Setup.png

And this is the redundancy I want to achieve:

HP 2920-48G Switch (J9728A) Setup Active_Passive.png

I want to setup the switch as Active/Passive also so that if Switch 1 down, I still have Switch 2 and eth1 will be active NIC for servers.

My questions are:

1. Can I do redundancy for this switch without stacking module? If yes, any idea how can I do that?

2. Is STP is possible solution for this?

Any suggestion would greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advanced!

Joven D.

For windows server2012, your setup will work using NIC teaming in switch independent mode. (interconnct switches using extra cable, none is shown)

No STP involved, windows will do the trick for you

Hi

Thanks for reply.

I want to use this HP switch as Layer 3 with redundancy. Would it possible to do it without using stacking module?

Thanks

This switch doesn't support L3 redundancy protocols like VRRP, so stacking module is the way to go

Re: HP 2920-48G Switch (J9728A) Redundancy without Stacking module

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Seems I got 2 options to make a redundancy for this switch:

1. Use the switch independently and use NIC teaming. Routing will take care on router side.

Or

2. Buy stacking module and use NIC teaming then use the switch as Layer 3.

Thanks for the information.

Appreciate it!
