SCCM Wake on LAN - Works on local subnet but not other subnets

Hi,

Having an issue whereby Wake on LAN from SCCM 2012 R2 works on the Subnet local to the SCCM Site Server but not on other Subnets. From the SCCM 2012 R2 guidance it requires UDP port 9 to be forwarded. The setup we have involves a Transit VLAN from one site to another site so the Wakeup packet should travel as below:

1. SCCM Site server on 10.1.x.x subnet

2. HP Procurve Multilayer (Layer 3) Switch at 10.1.1.1

3. Transit VLAN (172.x.x.x) on a /31 Subnet which is seperate from both the 10.1.x.x subnet and the 10.3.x.x subnet

4. HP Procurve Multilayer (Layer 3) Switch at 10.3.1.1

5. Edge Switch within the 10.3.x.x subnet

6. Client Machine within the 10.3.x.x subnet

From looking at the "sh ip forward protocols" command on 10.1.1.1 and 10.3.1.1 I can see that UDP port 9 is forwarded to 10.3.255.255 and 10.1.255.255 respectively, however there is no forwarding for UDP port 9 for the Transit VLAN (172.x.x.x) from either 10.1.1.1 or 10.3.1.1.

I'm therefore wondering if it would be necessary to add forwarding for UDP port 9 for the Transit VLAN for this to work, would packets be dropped by the Transit VLAN as they are UDP port 9 or should they be passed through as forwarding is enabled for the destination subnet?

On a side note, is there any way to generate a UDP port 9 packet from one of our switches and track where it gets dropped for troubleshooting purposes? I seem to remember this being possible from Cisco kit but I have very limited experience with HP kit so far.

Would be very grateful for any insight you guys can give me!

James
