Spanning tree and stacking

I am new to spanning tree technology and the network I recently aquired and it and stacking enabled. I am looking at trying to find some best practices information to use to evaluate spanning tree in the network to make sure it is as efficient as it can be when I look throug the logs I see alot of these:

08/30/19 14:52:01 00076 ports: ST1-CMDR: port 5/1 is now on-line
I 08/30/19 14:51:58 00435 ports: ST1-CMDR: port 5/1 is Blocked by STP
I 08/30/19 14:51:56 00077 ports: ST1-CMDR: port 5/1 is now off-line
I 08/30/19 14:47:50 00076 ports: ST1-CMDR: port 6/14 is now on-line
I 08/30/19 14:47:48 00435 ports: ST1-CMDR: port 6/14 is Blocked by STP

Is this typical? 

Also is it best practice to do both stacking and spanning tree in your network? I am assuming that stacking and spanning tree are two independent technologies.

Hello 

Yes, stacking and spanning tree are 2 independent features 

Spanning is a L2 reducndancy protocol to avoid loops in the network whereas stacking is a technology used for networking switch failover

Stacking in Aruba is referred to as VSF
