Re: 11.11 and 11.31 file system compatibility question
On disk file systems do no change too often!
The application is also likely to work on 11.11, but may requires 11.31.
That's up to the application.
fwiw,
Hein.

Re: 11.11 and 11.31 file system compatibility question
I see no reason why this won't work. It all depends on the application. Test it, your milage may vary.
You can't run serviceguard like this but thats not the question.
11.31 can mount logical volumes created by 11.11 systems without modifying them or making them incompatible with 11.11

SolutionIf I understand you correctly, you have a system running 11.31, and you wish to split off a business copy and mount those on a box running 11.11 for backup.
The latest version of VxFS for 11.11 was 3.5, and I beleive the latest vxfs layout supported in that release was 4
The earliest (and only right now) version of VxFS for 11.31 was 4.1, and I beleive that defaults to vxfs layout 6.
I don't think VxFS/JFS v3.5 will mount a filesystem created using the default options in v4.1.
Of course you can override those options using mkfs (see man mkfs_vxfs on your 11.31 box for how to create a filesystem with a layout of version 4)
In all cases as indicated above, you can determine the vxfs layout version of an existing filesystem using fstyp -v

Re: 11.11 and 11.31 file system compatibility question
that's it exactly my intention. Are you sure, layout 4 is the last one for 11.11? Will I not be able to deploy higher version of Veritas product on the system, running 11.11 (now it's 3.5, as you said)?
Thank you,
N.

Re: 11.11 and 11.31 file system compatibility question
It will not work.
Default disk layout version for a HP-UX 11iv3 filesystem is disk layout version 6, with vxfs 4.1 or disk layout version 7, with vxfs 5.0.
HP-UX 11.11 does not support disk layout version 6 or disk layout version 7, http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-5853/5991-5853.pdf, and thus would not able to mount a hp-ux 11.31 filesystem.
Best Regards,
Chris
