Extend lun on MSA1000

Hi,
We have an rp3440 running HP-UX 11.11 with a raid5-set on an MSA1000.
We need to add 2 disks to the raidset and increase the size of the vg.
Can this be done without backup/restore the data? If so, how?

Re: Extend lun on MSA1000

Rather than extending the LUN, I think what you would want to do is create additional LUNs and include them into the VG with vgextend.

Re: Extend lun on MSA1000

This should not be a problem. Refer the MSA1000 for addinging disks online. Once that is done, all you have to do is do pvcreate, vgextend, lvextend, fsadm. If you have online JFS, you can do that online, else you will have to unmount the file system.

Re: Extend lun on MSA1000

Hi,

Instead of increasing the existing LUN, if you are making the new disks as a new LUN then pvcreate, vgextend and lvextend & extendfs/fsadm would help you to increase the filesystem size without bakup/restore.

If you are increasing the existing LUN it may not be possible. if this is the case you have to do a pvcreate on the whole LUN once again and start from scratch. hence a FULL backup and restore will be required.

Siva.

Re: Extend lun on MSA1000

Thanks. But what is the best approach if we plan to use the whole raidset for use on this one rp3440?
- Make a 2nd lun and vg on it and combine this vg with the one exisiting?
- Expand the lun, make a 2nd and combine?
- Expand the lun and extend the vg?

Re: Extend lun on MSA1000

Hoi Peter,

- Make a 2nd lun and vg on it and combine this vg with the one exisiting?
If you create a second lun you do not need to backup/restore your data. pvcreate, vgextend the volume group with the new lun and lvextend the logical volumes.

- Expand the lun, make a 2nd and combine?
I don't this is possible, you can extend the diskgroup and add a lun

- Expand the lun and extend the vg?
Also possible but you will need to recreate your volume group (MAX PE per PV) and restore your data.

Hope this helps,

Re: Extend lun on MSA1000

The answer is "it depends" I never prefer a LUN of 300GB, rather two of 150GB would be fine for me. Manageability..

Re: Extend lun on MSA1000

Hi Peter,

I would VOTE for

-Make a 2nd lun and vg on it and combine this vg with the one exisiting

This would be easy for you interms of flexiblity becoz, you can just extend the VG and LV after pvcreateing the new LUN.

Siva.

Re: Extend lun on MSA1000

Ok thanks for this QUICK replies,
I go for the 2nd lun and vg and combine this with the exisiting vg.
