Throwing in my 2 cents, I agree with Larry, Vince and Bill. Keep root smaller and cleaner. It should be static and not grow. If there are sub-directories there that are growing your applications are probably putting data or objects in bad places.
Find the directories that are growing and split them off as new mount points. Or better yet, clean up the applications.
