Failed boot drive cannot remove from LVM

How can I either fix or remove a failed boot hard drive from LVM so I can get an ignite backup.

I can query the drive with diskinfo, unlike another server which has the same problem but I can't do a diskinfo on it.

Since I can query the drive on this server, I figured it can be worked with somehow. Basically I want to either recover the drive or remove it from LVM so I can at least get make_net_recovery of the OS and have HP replace the drive later.

I tried mv /etc/lvmtab to /etc/lvmtab.old and running vgscan -a -v  but vg00 fails due to the bad disk and does not get put into /etc/lvmtab.

This server is an HP-UX 11.11   9000/800/rp7420

These are stale and are using failed  primary boot drive /dev/dsk/c0t8d0.

Hi Jerrym,

to do that you have to remove it via the pv key you can get it like follow .

# lvdisplay -v -k /dev/vg00/lvol1|more

"0" and "1" corresponds to pv key from disks belonging to the VG .

Now basically the following steps apply :

# Remove ghost disk from one LV with mirroring
# -> the disk must be removed from all LV mirror before being vgreduced
# -> get pv key from lv (look for the number on the stale device)
lvdisplay -k -v /dev/vg00/lvol3
# -> remove the mirror for all lv with the key 

# ---> If some LV are not using the failed disk the mirror will as well be broken off if I remember well
lvreduce -k -m 0 /dev/vg00/lvol3 <pv-key>
# reduce the vg
vgreduce -l vg00 /dev/dsk/<your-disk>

It works. I had to also take out the disk entry in /etc/lvmpvg file also since we use that.

Thank you so much Thierry. I did not know about using the disk key. The man page does not say much about -k.
