HP-UX 11i v3 and EVA5000 -- we can't use lvm

Hi folks,

I have a test with customer; we use the new version of HP-UX (V3) and one LUN(100GB) from EVA 5000, but when I try to create a LVM structure wiht the LUN, we have the following error:

pvcreate: writing LVM record: Device busy
Command Unsuccessful
press enter Key to continue

We verify and the LUN isn't used by another volume group, someone have any idea about it???

Shalom,

Probably the LUN is not correctly configured with the WWN of the system trying to use it.

Check the EVA-5000 array controller.

Re: HP-UX 11i v3 and EVA5000 -- we can't use lvm

Is the firmware current on the EVA5000? I thought I'd read a piece on newer firmware that would support use of 11.31 on an EVA5K.

Re: HP-UX 11i v3 and EVA5000 -- we can't use lvm

Hi,

look at this:

http://docs.hp.com/en/9529/hpux_io_devices.htm

The line
EVA GL w/AP -> AA says support for 11.31

EVA5000 (HSV110) & EVA3000 (HSV100) GL says NO support.

The active/passive version won't work.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP-UX 11i v3 and EVA5000 -- we can't use lvm

According to the doc I referenced above, EVA5k is supported with the correct firmware:

DESCRIPTION

HP StorageWorks 3000/5000 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) Storage System customers that require support for the HP-UX 11.31 Operating System and are not currently running VCS v4.007 should contact HP to obtain the required system software.

Customers who have already installed or upgraded their EVA3000/5000 Storage System to VCS v4.00x do not need to take any further action in order to support the HP-UX 11.31 operating system, however HP recommends that customers upgrade to VCS v4.007
SCOPE

EVA3000/5000 Storage Systems NOT currently running VCS v4.00x will require a VCS upgrade to support HP-UX 11.31.
RESOLUTION

Customers should contact and work with their HP Services representative to obtain the VCS v4.007 system software that will enable them to upgrade the EVA3000/5000 Storage System to support HP-UX 11.31.

Re: HP-UX 11i v3 and EVA5000 -- we can't use lvm

Natalia,

Greetings of Peace and Clean Air!

If your EVA5000 has a firmware below VCS 4.X, then it means it operates as an Active/Passive Array - and that means you need SecurePath for Active/Passive arrays - which at 11.31 is no longer available.

So the only course of action for your CU is to have them upgrade their EVA to VCS 4.X for Active/Active operation. With Active/Active operation - LVM can now use PVLINKS for path protection to the EVA LUNs. Alternately, if you use VxVM - DMP will also utilze the Active/Active nature both for path protection and load balancing.

BUT if you really need to use EVA @ an old VCS Rev. - I think you can try single controller/HBA operation - since it is still fully supported. The caveat is you won't get path protection of course...

Hope this helps.
