HP-UX PA-Risc 11iv1 LVMs vs. HP-UX Itanium 11iv3 LVMs

Hi,
We are getting ready to replace our HP-UX PA-Risc 11iv1 Servers with HP-UX Itanium 11iv3 Blade Servers. We have all our application drives and Oracle database drives presented from a EVA6400 SAN. Some drives are using MCSG and the SAN has Replication Disk Groups that use CA to a EVA4400 remote location.
My questions are:
1. Do we need to recreate the LVMs with the new OS or can we export and import the volume groups?
2. Is there any convert programs that need to be ran to upgrade the disk or filesystems to be used with 11iv3?
3. Are there any gotchas if we do an export or import with any of the disk created with 11iv1 to a 11iv3?
4. Would we be better off recreating all LVMs with the new OS and restoring our data?
Thanks for your help.

Sorry, the new servers will be Integrity Servers.

Re: HP-UX PA-Risc 11iv1 LVMs vs. HP-UX Itanium 11iv3 LVMs

Shalom,

1. Do we need to recreate the LVMs with the new OS or can we export and import the volume groups?

SEP: If both systems have access to the EVA, then export import will suffice.

2. Is there any convert programs that need to be ran to upgrade the disk or filesystems to be used with 11iv3?

SEP: 11iv3(11.31) is backward compatible. No need to upgrade the file systems right away. Might want to hold off on that step.

3. Are there any gotchas if we do an export or import with any of the disk created with 11iv1 to a 11iv3?

SEP: Not really. Its a time proven process. Going back to 11.11 involves features and vxfs versions that are not present in the older OS.

4. Would we be better off recreating all LVMs with the new OS and restoring our data?

SEP: No, but you can if you wish.

Re: HP-UX PA-Risc 11iv1 LVMs vs. HP-UX Itanium 11iv3 LVMs

Thank you for your reply..

When I do a fstyp -v on the logical disk, it shows the current version as 4.
1. Do you know the version that 11iv3 Mar2010 will create?
2. Do you know what command will upgrade the disks if we need to later on?

Thanks.

Hi Leslie:

See appendix-C of "VeritasTM File System 5.0.1
Administrator's Guide HP-UX 11i v3". Therein you will see that VxFS layout version-4 is compatible from 11.11 thorough 11.31 :

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c02220689/c02220689.pdf

At 11.31, the default layout (depending on the version of VxFS you install --- 4.1 or 5.0.1 --- will be layout version-6 or layout version-7. Hence, take care to create any new filesystems on 11.31 with layout-4 if you want backward mount-ability at 11.11. You can always upgrade to a higher layout value later with 'vxupgrade(1M)'.

To specifiy the layout version when you create a VxFS filesysgem, use 'mkfs_vxfs (1M)'.

Regards!

The default will be version 5.

> 2. Do you know what command will upgrade the disks if we need to later on?

vxfsconvert will convert HFS to VxFS version 4 or convert VxFS version 2 or 3 to version 4. Read the man page precautions about converting a full filesystem and HFS considerations.

vxupgrade can convert version 2,3, and 4 to version 5 but read the precautions about space and fsadm to reorganize the new versions.
