How to determine the actual path/PVLink in use at a given moment....

I have an old 11iv1 server, with a VG made up of a bunch of disks, each with 4 paths - which are correctly showing in the VG as 1 defined primary path and 3 alternate "pvlinks".

Silly question, but if the primary were to fail and I/O was then to move to the first alternate link then (apart from looking in log files) how could I determine which one of the actual paths was actually in use at any given time?

I dont think the output of vgdisplay changes if a primary path were to fail over (i.e. vgdisplay still shows the primary path first and then alternate links)...what I'm looking for is a "what pvlink is *currently* in use" command!

Any input welcome...

The vgdisplay commend shows you the order of path, the first alternate will be used if the primary fails. You will find a related message in syslog about a failed path, the device will be shown as unavailable in vgdisplay.

Hope this helps!

Great, thanks - I knew about syslog, but didn't realize that vgdisplay would in fact show you which path had failed...
